• I am working with a WP based site that was built w/version 1.5. In the process of backing up the database (after creating a valid backup), some reference to the database was broken. I had difficulty getting timely help from the current hosting company and control panel tools are very restricted.

As a solution, I decided to place all the site files on a new host’s server, where I’m rebuilding the site differently (WP will no longer be the entire site). I need the old site to function while creating the new one, so I put the existing site in it’s own directory and created a new database into which I imported data from the backup I created. That worked smoothly. In the files that I uploaded, I already had all the WP upgrade steps completed (deleting old files, preserving appropriate files, etc).

I ran the WP upgrade utility. It upgraded the database and I clicked on “Continue” to complete the site upgrade. The next screen that appeared was the home page on the old server, which is a temporary static page. I’m missing something here. Something is referencing the domain name, which still points to the old server. Anyone know what that is?

Did you change the domain name references in the database before restoring it? A simple search and replace in a text editor would do.

WordPress knows it’s own domain name and URL and if that changes, it will force it back to the correct one.

No I didn’t. I wondered if it was something in the database. Now that it’s restored and upgraded for the new version, how would you suggest I do that? Is there a particular table in the DB that I should try to edit or should I create a new backup from the upgraded DB, do a search and replace locally, and then restore it to the server?

Change the “home” and “site_url” values in the DB: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/
