• I have again tried to update my WordPress site using the auto update feature having been prompted about the new version and thinking it was good practice to upgrade, which has once again failed. I have never seen this upgrade option work on any site! I was advised before that the reason update failed was because I was trying to jump too many versions however on this occasion this is not the case as I am upgrading from 3.9.1 to 3.9.2, as single upgrade hop.

    I cannot understand why simple upgrading is so much of an issue with WordPress? It appears I must again look at running a complex manual upgrade process of copying over files with conflicting documentation from Codex about exactly which folders and files should be deleted and which should be removed. Why is the WordPress update so problematic and why is this such a persistent problem? When will it be fixed?

    Can you suggest what I need to do to make this work as designed?

    I have also been notified in my dashboard that 7 of my plugins have updates available however not a single one would update giving an error “Could not remove the old plugin” Is there a reason for this error and can it be avoided? Do you need to manually remove first and if this is the case where is the notice of this requirement?

  • Upgrading from 3.9.1 to 3.9.2 works on millions of sites, so I wouldn’t say it’s a generic WordPress issue and may be related to your specific site(s). For all the sites that you say you’ve never seen it work on, are they all on the same server/host?

    There is possibly a permission issue with the files/directories on your host.

    If an automatic update doesn’t work, you can always do it manually.

    FIRST, MAKE A BACKUP OF THE FILES OF YOUR CURRENT SITE.

    I repeat: make a backup of the files on your current site.

    Then download a fresh copy of WordPress software, unzip it and then upload it all (except the wp-content folder and its contents!) to your server. Again, leave the wp-content folder on your server alone and do NOT overwrite it with the new WordPress version.

    This is the “standard” way of doing a manual upgrade — please let us know if that’s conflicting with anything you’ve read in the Codex.

    Hello Mark

    Sorry I missed you post and thank you for providing helpful assistance.

    I host my own site internally so I have complete access to my own LAMP environment however I have before requested specific instructions on what permission should be applied to each WordPress folder so I can check but alas I got no response. I also sent back advice that the manual instructions on Codex for upgrading WordPress manually have folder structures different from what I can see on my server so I must presume there are errors in these instructions because I installed WordPress at home following exactly the instructions from www.remarpro.com. I have never altered the permissions on any of the folders so I do not understand why the upgrades fail.

    The other site where I have seen upgrades fail were from friends who also hosted their own site for “Not For Profit” communities request my assistance with manual upgrades and of course they asked why the single button method always fails. I was able to get them running again but somewhat frustrated that upgrading can be such a problem to require manual copying and overwriting of files following instruction that show a different folder structure than what I was looking at on the respective web server.
