I just began an upgrade from 2.8.6 to 2.9.2. File uploads were fine, although I forgot to keep the wp-config.php file from the 2.8.6 installation. So that was recreated without hassle. I was then told I could log in, so I did. My credentials were still in the database, so I had to log in with those, which was fine on the front end. But when I try to access the wp-admin area, my browser keeps trying to redirect me in an endless loop now.

    What could be causing that?

  • The current version of WordPress is 3.5
Are you sure to upgrade to 2.9.2 specifically ?

Yes, that is the latest version of wordpress mu from what I can tell in the downloads area. In addition, my host’s mysql installation is still 4.2 I believe, and 3.5 requires a higher version.

I tried a second time and it worked this time.

songdove, the latest version of WordPress MU is actually WordPress 3.5

They were merged in the 3.0 branch and from there forward, you’re just on WordPress.

if your host is stuck on SQL (or PHP) 4.2, you need a new host. ASAP.

I contacted my host about it. I was able to eventually upgrade all the way up to 3.1.4. So now I’m only 4 versions away from 3.5. My host has offered to “upgrade” me to a new and better server as they have no plans to upgrade the server I’m on. . . a ploy to get me to pay more per month for better services. . . The focus of this blog isn’t a money-maker however, to pay for the upgraded services. . . I’ll have some thinking to do here. . .
