upgrade from 2.7.1 to latest 3.3.1

Hi all
I’m finally going to be upgrading from 2.7.1 to 3.3.1. I’ve read that you need to do manual upgrades in stages of the in between versions for such a big jump, however when I checked my dashboard and click on Tools>Upgrade, WordPress is allowing me to either “Upgrade Automatically” or “Download 3.3.1”. Since automatic upgrade is not advised, why is WordPress allowing it? Should I still try the automatic upgrade first? I have just backed up my database and files (following instruction from the various Codex help topics) and have deactivated all plugins. I’m definately not web-savvy or IT trained – I have created my own website purely from reading through these support forums and have found many good advice. Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks!
