Upgrade Failure – Redirect Loop

  • After WordPress tried to upgrade from 2.8.x to 2.9, I find that I can still see my website, but I cannot log into the admin page.

    I get the following message “This webpage has a redirect loop.” Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • I have exact same problem…upgraded to 2.9 and now just cannot go to my admin dashboard as it goes into infinite redirect loop.

    Please help someone !

    Same here. Upgrade to 2.9 completed with automatic upgrade,then could not get back into dashboard. Website still works.

    /wp-admin -takes me directly into infinite redirect loop.
    /wp-login -shows login page,then goes into redirect loop after signing in.

    This nightmare started three hours ago.
    Want to avoid starting fresh with manual install

    Same problem. I get the following: https://chanukah.holidayresources.info/images/WordPressUpgradeChanukah.png

    I click the button and it hangs on the following URL and registers done:

    Any assistance is appreciated. Like the rest, I need to post and have WP-Admin Access

    Identical upgrade experience for me as well. I performed the upgrade using automatic upgrade functionality. The public site ran as expected, admin section was not available due to redirection loop.

    To troubleshoot, I tried the following things that did NOT work:
    -I deleted my plugins from my site (after backing them up). Redirect still occurred.
    -I cleared out my .htaccess file (after backing it up). Redirect still happened.

    I then downgraded my site to 2.8.6:
    -I uploaded and over wrote all the files/folders on my site (except for the wp-content folder). Site was back online. Was able to log into admin section.
    -All of my plugins showed as missing. I re-uploaded them to my plugins folder from my local backup. All plugins worked as expected.
    -At this point, my site was fully functional after downgrading from 2.9 -> 2.8.6.

    I tried to upgrade again with plugins disabled before attempting the upgrade:
    -I uninstalled super-cache and disabled all other plugins thinking there was a plugin conflict causing the redirect.
    -I upgraded again using the automatic upgrade feature.
    -After another successful upgrade, the exact same symptoms occurred as my original upgrade i.e. site worked but admin section dropped into the redirect loop.

    After this, I downgraded everything (again) to 2.8.6 and reactivated my plugins (again). At this point, all is well with my site running 2.8.6.

    I will wait until this redirect loop issue is sorted out before attempting to upgrade again.

    Hope this information helps others that are have run into the same issue and look forward to some additional suggestions for upgrading.

    Hi guys,
    I posted above about experiencing the same redirect loop issue as netlawbmg. I was able to get my site 2.8.6 site upgraded to 2.9 (Mike & Ann | Visual Storytellers) by following the steps below:

    1) change folder name of the plugins to _plugins. The plugins will all now show as missing in the plugin management screen.
    2) select the default theme (Kubrick)
    3) upgrade automatically to 2.9
    4) select your current theme (headway 1.5.5 in my case)
    5) rename _plugins folder to plugins. Activate plugins one-by-one to verify they all work as expected.

    Suspected Reason for the Redirect Loop
    I *think* it was code within my theme (headway 1.5.5) that caused the upgrade to fall into the redirect loop. Turns out there is some redirection code used for SEO that is built into the theme. This is likely what caused the redirect loop. I discovered the above recommended installation process by reading through the private user forum associated with the theme I am currently using (headway 1.5.5).

    As in Mike’s case, I just finished fighting with a blog with exactly this issue. It was the headway theme. Headway version 156, WordPress version 2.9.1

    Go to wp-content/themes/ and rename the offending headway folder to something different.

    Then go back to domain.com/wp-admin/ and the upgrade should continue/finish.

    When it does, you can then restore the theme if you like, and reactivate it after logging in.

    This appears to be the reason that the old “safe upgrade” policy included disabling all themes and plugins before upgrading.

    I have the same problem on one of my sites, getting the “This webpage has a redirect loop.” message.
    I am on Version 2.9.2 and the last upgrade seemed to work OK for everything else.

    I can’t access admin via the normal way, ie: /wp-admin
    but I can if I use /wp-admin/index.php

    It doesn’t seem to have any other problems, as far as I am aware.
