Just upgraded to 2.8 yesterday (from 2.3.3).

Today – saw the message “2.8.1 available – please upgrade now” – decided to try out the automatic update procedure, and see if it’s really any less painful than the old manual procedure.

I reached a screen asking for “connection information” – hostname, user, password, ftp/ftps.

But this is rather confusing, and undocumented as far as I can tell – is it asking for the host to download from, or the host my installation runs on? Is it asking for root, the account the web-server runs under, the admin user, or what?

And why is it asking at all – shouldn’t it already know all of that?

    Thanks for any advice.

Turns out I had to do a chown -R <web_server_owner>.<web_server_owner> on the entire directory tree where my site lives. Then things worked fine.

Note: I found this out by googling, and found the answer on a random blog posting. Really needs to be in the documentation.

ive got cpanel/whm. Can you tell me where i type that command. I see it over and over but have no idea how to do it.

this connection info screen is bullchit and i keep getting it everywhere in wordpress
