UpdraftPlus (UP) is corrupting large ZIP files. I found this out when attempting to restore a client’s site that had been taken down due to missed hosting payment to GoDaddy. I set up a new WP install and UP, copied the last UP backup set to the UP folder and attempted RESTORE. All files restored correctly except for the “uploads” file, 233mb. Checking the zip file locally showed a corrupt file that could not be unzipped without using a premium tool, which repaired the file so I could access the folders and content, which were intact. Then, I manually restored the content to the server’s wp-content area, month by month.

After getting the site back up completely, I ran another UP backup set. This time, when the backup was complete, I checked the zip files. Again, the Uploads file is corrupt!

Now, I have another client who also uses GoDaddy for his WP site. I had to restore his site when GoDaddy took it off line for failure to pay for the hosting (he had changed credit cards without changing the GoDaddy settings). I was able to restore his website using the UP backup set I had on my local drive. His Uploads ZIP file is close to 900mb, so size is apparently not the issue here.

Both clients have the same GoDaddy Managed WP hosting plan. My dropbox account has plenty of space and has never run out. Therefore, there seems to be a significant problem with UP.

I can provide backup logs as needed.

You’re using Dropbox for the remote storage? We’ve just made a new release a few moments ago which fixes a problem with interrupted Dropbox uploads when the notification from Dropbox about successfully uploaded data does not arrive. Please can you update and try again? Sorry for the trouble!

Yes. Using dropbox, then I copy the dropbox files to my local system. I updated UP and did another backup. Then checked the large file for integrity and it opened without error. It doesn’t explain why I was able to back up and restore another client’s site with a much larger Uploads file that apparently did copy to dropbox and complete without error. That backup was done last year (May 13, 2016). So somewhere in between then and March 22, 2017 (the date of the recent backup with the corrupt Uploads file), the UP code changed, or the way UP and dropbox communicate changed, or something… Needless to say, thinking I have solid backups of all my clients’ sites, and then discovering I don’t, means I’ve got to check the integrity of all of the backups on my clients’ sites by testing all the ZIP files to see if they are recognized as valid. It’s not hard to Open them without unzipping them, but it will take some time to locate and run this on about 40 websites.

I appreciate you getting back to me; I know your name is on this plugin and I thank you for answering my query, despite being a free customer at the moment.

    Best, RMT

    Hi,

So somewhere in between then and March 22, 2017 (the date of the recent backup with the corrupt Uploads file), the UP code changed

Yes, this is correct. Dropbox deprecated their API (APIv1), and so we had to write new code for their new API (APIv2), and unfortunately, it introduced an unintended bug that affected uploads.
