UpdraftPlus Backup and Restoration plugin not updating properly

    I am having a problem with the Updraftplus plugin (free version) on a number of sites.

    Plugin update starts OK – then just freezes and the website and WordPress admin are disabled with just the maintenance mode screen visible.

    To overcome this I have to use FTP or C Panel file manager to rename the plugin and therefore disable it, return to WordPress, which then works again and then reurn to rename the file again.

    After that it all works again.

    Doesn’t happen with any other plugin and only started recently.

    Sites have adequate webspace and CPU resources and run on Apache web servers.

    Please can you post a screenshot of the frozen update process? Use https://snag.gy or something similar if it helps.

    When WordPress updates a plugin, it does this:
    1) Creates the .maintenance file
    2) Downloads the new plugin zip
    3) Unzips it
    4) Moves the unzipped folder into place
    5) Removes the .maintenance file

    UD is one of the bigger plugins, owing to the number of different cloud storage methods (and hence toolkits from different cloud storage vendors) it supports, and the high number of translations. So, it’s likely that your hosting has *some* limit somewhere that WordPress runs up against. No plugin code runs whilst a plugin updates – it’s just WP doing the things listed above, so you should be able to reproduce the same problem with any plugin of comparable size (UD is around 20Mb when unzipped).

    Hi David,

    I can’t provide a screenshot as the problem was cleared when I disabled and re-enabled the plugin as described above.

    It has happened on more than one website though and the circumstances were the same each time.

    I can’t really simulate it either as the only plugin I use of comparable size (I think) is Wordfence Security and that updated without any problems.

    Looks like I will have to wait until there is another UpdraftPlus update and see what happens then.
