    Hi,

I’ll try to make this as succinct as I can, but I need to explain the background. I have had my website since January 2023, and Updraft Plus was one of the first plug ins I installed. I connected it to Google Drive for remote backup, and I believed all was well. I always got an email every day saying the backup was successful.

I haven’t been keeping up with website maintenance since December, due to “life circumstances”, but recently went in to finally do updates, including Updraft Plus. I went to check on the latest backup log, because I noticed I haven’t been getting the emails anymore. The latest backup that day had failed, and as I checked all the previous ones, I saw that they had been apparently failing for quite some time.

I got very concerned, and went to check Google Drive. I had never checked it before, I just assumed the backups were being sent there every day after the backups. Well, apparently the last time a backup of my website was sent to Google Drive was in JANUARY 2023, the same month I first started my website! So, for an entire year now, my website has not had a backup sent to remote storage in Google Drive. This is obviously extremely concerning!

It seems that Updraft Plus is no longer working on my site, and no backups are being completed anymore. It scares me that I haven’t had a remote backup of my website for over a year, and I am skeptical that Updraft Plus was actually even backing up my site all this time.

I don’t know what to do, as I have tried all the troubleshooting I know how to do, and even after Googling it, I couldn’t find the answer to my problem.

For reference, I have Siteground as my hosting, and all of my plugins, WordPress, and my Theme are updated to the latest version.

I hope someone can help me with this. I am so scared of losing everything I worked so hard for in building my website. It isn’t safe to not have a backup!

  • Hello,

I am sorry to hear about these issues. Please could you make sure you have the latest version of UpdraftPlus and:

    1. Navigate to UpdraftPlus >> Advanced Tools >> Wipe settings and click the Wipe settings button
    2. Re-connect your Google Drive account. On UpdraftPlus >> Settings click the Google Drive icon in the list of remote storage locations and then click Save Changes and follow the instructions to add it as a remote storage location.
    3. On UpdraftPlus >> Settings >> Email ensure that the checkbox is ticked and the correct email address shows, then click Save Changes
    4. On UpdraftPlus >> Backup / Restore click Backup Now and run the backup

    After performing these actions:

    • Does the backup complete successfully and can you see it in the Backup / Restore >> Existing backups section as per this screenshot?
    • Do you receive an email report?

    Hello,

Thank you so much for your help! I have some good news, and some bad news:

Good news: I followed the instructions, and the backup was successful! I checked my Google Drive account, and I see the backup files are listed there. This is awesome!

Bad news: I saw in the backup report log that there was an error in sending the email.

Here is a copy and paste:

0048.955 (0) Sending email (‘Files and database (Full backup)’) report (attachments: 0, size: 0 KB) to: chris… 0049.632 (0) An error occurred when sending a backup report email and/or backup file(s) via email (wp_mail_failed): { “error”: { “code”: 400, “message”: “Mail service not enabled”, “errors”: [ { “message”: “Mail service not enabled”, “domain”: “global”, “reason”: “failedPrecondition” } ], “status”: “FAILED_PRECONDITION” } } 0049.633 (0) The backup succeeded and is now complete

Also, I saw something in the report referring the Google Drive with several lines like this:

0048.685 (0) Google Drive: backup_2024-03-28-2138_FITNESS_AND_FOOD_FREEDOM_9b978195162b-others.zip: Deletion failed: file was not found

    Is that something bad?

If it would help to see the entire report log I would be happy to upload it, but I didn’t see a way to do it.

Thank you so much for your help so far, and I am hoping you can help me to figure out the email issue, and also help me if there is indeed a problem with the Google Drive file

    Best regards,

    Christine

    Hello,

Thank you for the information. For the first issue I would advise installing an SMTP email plugin like this one as on some hosts the default function for sending email is sometimes restricted or disabled.

Regarding the message that a backup was not found – to fix this delete the backups in your Backup / Restore >> Existing backups section but leave the option to Also delete from remote storage unticked as in this screenshot. This should ensure that for every backup you have on Google Drive there is a backup registered in the database.

This can sometimes happen if (for example) there has been a direct deletion on the remote storage location of a backup.

That said, the backup appears to be working correctly – regarding sharing logs we usually recommend using pastebin.com.
