For the past few months, across a number of different WP sites, I have suddenly had errors when updating the plugin and now, errors when trying to backup to DropBox or restore a backup. (In terms of restoration, I have followed advice from an Updraft answer, to download a backup manually from DropBox to my desktop and ftp it up to the updraft folder – which works okay but isn’t really how things should be).

I have screen shots of failed updates and incomplete upload information, but cannot add them here. I simply want Updraft to realise they have some problems since v1.15 up to v 1.16.18 that have appeared and are not being addressed.

    Hi,

Please see this, and the linked article explaining how WordPress performs plugin updates: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/wordpress-crashed-when-updating-updraftplus-what-can-i-do/ (what it boils down to is, poor quality web hosting and large plugins can be a problem, and it’s outside of plugins’ control to do anything about, unfortunately, because of how WordPress core performs plugin updates).

    Best wishes,
    David

Okay. Thanks David. I’ll take a look at the link. It was only because I was having a few repeated issues over the past few months, that I mentioned the experience. I have used UpdraftPlus for a few years and it has always been excellent.

One last question. I have an automatic plugin updater installed on my WP sites. This seems to update all plugins except for UpdraftPlus. Is there a reason for this, or is there something I can activate in UpdraftPlus so it updates its plugin when an update is ready?

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

Are you still having the same problem here?
You should be able to update the plugin as normal when using the free version.
It is only our premium version that requires users to connect to our license server so they can receive updates.

I seem to get different issues with different WordPress sites. The majority do now auto-update UpdraftPlus with the other plugins that use an auto-update plugin such as ‘
Easy Updates Manager’, but a couple do seem to update UpdraftPlus. About half of my sites allow me to update UpdraftPlus manually and successfully, and the other half tell me the update has failed. I refresh the browser window and suddenly the faile update is showing that it is now the latest version. Whether or not it is the latest version, and just thinks I’ve updated it and therefore it doesn’t need updating again – I have no idea.

None of these things I have described are necessarily a particular problem, but they are an annoyance; and I don’t have time to go through 14 websites working out why some work properly with [the basic free version of UpdraftPlus] Updraft updates and some do not. All I can do is flag up a relatively recent problem, to see whether or not Updraft may have added something in their plugin that might suddenly be interfering with its functionality, or now opened up to be affected by one or other of existing plugins being used in my sites.

    Hi,

It is possible that there are conflict with the other plugins you are using as you are able to update the plugin in other websites you have.

You could also ask your host/server admin to check the PHP error log. They might be able to find additional info as to why the update fails.

If it was a plugin conflict, it would possibly have been caused by the updraft plugin updates, rather than the other plugins, which have been in place since updraft worked properly (although admittedly, these get updated too).

I recently went through most of my sites and found that over half of them are updating updraft correctly. It does seem that when updraft says it has ‘failed’, a refresh of the plugins page shows updraft looking normal with the updated version showing. So possibly a false display of what has not actually occurred.
