• Hey, I use Updraft for several years on different sites. But this time I had to recover a site and the plugin failed.

    This is how it fails:
    – My sites does automatic Backups every day and keeps “10” copies(ok)
    – An error appeared on one page, my client says it was “5” days ago(ok)
    – I switched the plugin to “keep all backups” and did “2” extra manual backups(ok)
    – “3” days later after my vacation I recovered the backup that was now 8 days old (ok)
    – the problem was not solved, with this backup so I had to use an older backup (ok)
    – the older backups are now all deleted by updraft! (fails)

Why did it fail? Because after recovering also the options for Updraft itself where recovered. Since my default option is to keep 10 Backups, directly after the recovery only the 10 (5+2+3) newest backups where kept. The ones that are older – the ones that I needed now – were deleted by updraft from the server…unbelievable stupid ??

    I feel your pain, probably too late but;

    • I noticed updraft when restoring moves all the existing folders into folder-old (eg images-old, if I remember correctly). Maybe it did the same with the backups? Not sure if they’re on your server or hosted elsewhere
    • That it restored your settings, as included in the backup, is logical I think. How would it know which settings you didn’t want restored? I can see that when the backup next runs it would prune the backup destination again. I had another problem, leaving a setting to keep too many backups and filling a disk.. spotted just in time.
    • I have also learnt the hard way that if I need to restore from a backup, get all backups from the destination to somewhere else first (eg; all to my laptop).
    • For future pain avoidance, and depending on your host, backups of the whole server might be useful. EG: I have a digitalocean VM and have a weekly backups kept for a month, as well as targeted backups of directories/databases more frequently.

I hope the error was an easy recovery/fix.

Thank you for the reply: No there is no “-old” Folder. After the restore Updraft should not start deleting all backups!

The “whole Backup” is a good idea but it costs time and ressources. In that case the hoster saved me because he had a backup of the webspace including the old backups of updaft.

There is always an -old folder after a restoration (you cannot do another restoration until you delete the -old folders )

UpdraftPlus can will only delete old backups if you have specified this in the settings tab in your retention rules

@vupdraft: No, there is no -old-Folder with backups of the restored backup!
And: For the settings, you did not read my first post of this thread ;(
