I was updating our test website today and ran into a critical error problem with W3 Total Cache after updating WordPress to version 6.4. I found several threads on how to solve this error and am currently deleting the folders and files suggested and removing the htaccess bits. I haven’t had any problems with the plugin before and it happened right after I upgraded WordPress so I assume this was the cause.

I would like to avoid this happening again when I do update the live site, as is it taking quite a while to remove these folders. So my question is what steps I should be taking with W3 before upgrading WordPress? Should I be deactivating the plugin entirely, or turning off all the features, or purging all caches before upgrading?

    Hello @leponder

Thank you for reaching out and I am happy to help.

First of all, this is not a default behavior. So most likely the problem is related to permissions or some temporary hiccup with the WP upgrade. I’ve just upgraded a few env on the latest WP and I’ve experienced no issues of this kind or any fatal errors.

If the issue was related to the drop-in files, you may want to disable the features that are dropping in those files (page cache for advanced-cache.php or object caching for object-cache.php) and delete those two files before the update.
Once updated, re-enable the features in the W3TC settings and the new drop-files will be there automatically.

Once again, this is not a default behavior.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks!

I think it was exactly that, a permissions issue. After I got everything running again I got a permissions error about not being able to create a directory while trying to re-install W3. Thanks for the help!
