Quick question. I made a bunch of changes to my theme’s style.css file. I don’t want these changes to be lost or corrupted.
Will updating to a new version of WordPress affect my theme at all? what about plugins?

I have read that updating wordpress merely updates the core files and has nothing to do with the theme, but just wanted to make sure.
    thanks in advance

  • Hello,

Things like this can sometimes seem daunting but unless theres a plugin or something in your theme that’s incompatible with the latest version, it should be safe to update WordPress. To be safe though, make sure you have a backup of your site. It’s also a good idea to use a child theme if you aren’t already.

There are various ways to make a backup and most hosting companies do some form of daily backup. If you have access to the hosting control panel you’ll usually find a backup wizard there too. Check with your host and ask them to make the backup if you’re not sure how to.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Upgrading WordPress core files should not affect the custom styles in your theme.
Only if the theme itself needs an update will any changes in the stylesheet be lost.
I would recommend using a child theme so your changes will no be lost.

    Hope this helps
