Updating to 5.3 loads a blank screen

    Just tried to update a site to 5.3 and only getting a blank screen.
    When reloading, either I get the maintenance notice or “Another update is currently in progress.”.

    Any clues?

    Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    Thanks for your feedback.
    I finally updated all WP files manually by FTP and it worked.
    I really don’t know what was blocking this particular site as all others updated without issues and this one also updated to previous versions also without issues.
    Might have been a host issue.

    It might be an issue with PHP options “upload_max_filesize” if set too low as I just notice that the new WP zip package is over 13MB.

    My settings at this host where I had this issue was set the upload_max_filesize to 16MB and I just switched to 32MB.

    The issue looks like the download is starting but not completing and then freezes with the blank page. I cannot test anymore as I already manually updated the files by FTP. If you still have this issue, just follow the instructions here:
