Updating stock levels – disappeared?

I’m using version 1.6.5.2 and 3.4.2 WordPress.
I am creating variable products, using select attribute- for a shoe with various sizes. The issue I am having is that the product successfully creates and sizes are selctable on the front end, however when I go back to the product in the admin area the variations disappear.
I want the facility to add additional units to my stock levels when more are delivered from the manufacturer to the warehouse.
The only way I can individually update stock levels on the sizes is to delete all variations and then re-submit each variation again.
I can only assume this is an error as it’s a basic function that should be included. Any help would be appreciated thanks
