    UPDATE:
I successfully update the PHP version my site was using to 7. I then updated WordPress to the current version. Now I’m getting this error “The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”

I don’t know what email address is associated to the account, so I’m not sure what to do. I’m unable to access any information at all now.

I’m trying to update my PHP version from 5.5.9 to 7 so I can update my version of WordPress. When updating the PHP version, the site will start to give me a 500 error (Page isn’t working. Currently unable to handle this Request. HTTP ERROR 500).

I’ve tried deactivating all of my plugins and then updating, but the issue persists. Does anyone have any idea what I can do?

  • Have you tried checking the error log? The error log file can be in different places depending on your web hosting company. Look for a file named something like “error_log” in your main website folder or perhaps in a “logs” folder. You may need to turn WP_DEBUG on. See debugging in WordPress for more information

Thanks for replying. I now have a new issue after successfully updating the PHP and wordpress.

I still recommend checking the error log as the specific error is likely there.

I’m not able to check the error log myself, I’m working with someone else on this site and my access is very limited.

Some how a different them was activated, causing the error again.
I changed the theme back to Twenty Sixteen which now makes the site accessible, but now if I change the theme to anything else, the site stops working again.

The site is now using WordPress 5.2.2 & PHP version 7.0.33
