Updating on updates page constantly fails

  • Hi. not sure if this is a WordPress bug or the plugins that i have (though not likely), if i try to update themes or plugins through the updates page mid updating the page will reload and will leave the site in maintenance mode. I have found a work around through the theme and plugins page that updates using ajax but then will display a message asking me to reload page which i simply dismiss. have noticed this usually happens on large plugins and themes may be a timer is set to reload page to keep the connection (not sure), have tried searching but seems i might be the only one experiencing or my searching skills are not that good.

  • Hi, tygalive. This may be due to your WordPress server constraints, according to https://www.seedprod.com/wordpress-stuck-in-maintenance-mode/:

    Yet sometimes if your WordPress hosting server response is slow, or if you have low memory issues, your updates will time out interrupting the update process. If this happens, your site isn’t given the chance to be taken out of maintenance mode, meaning the maintenance screen will still be visible on your site, and you’ll have to manually remove it.

    I’m guessing you’ll have to see about increasing the memory available to you.

    thank you for your response, I had already set memory to 512mb and time set at 600 seconds which should be a lot. i have a local server also and it behaves in the same way. what happens is during updating through the updates screen, the page will reload mid-update leading to the update failing mid-way and since the maintenance mode may have been already set it is left that way.

    if i where to update using the plugins page or themes page it will complete successfully as it uses ajax but will be continuously asking me to reload page during the update, which i then cancel

    even if i update one by one as suggested in provided link it will still fail in the updates page as it will try to reload the whole page

    Hi, tygalive.

    I wonder if the problem is possibly linked to a corrupted version of wp-admin/update.php you have.

    Maybe one of the WordPress core files related to updating is messed up.
