Hi, I’ve read your article https://yoast.com/video/ask-yoast-how-to-update-images-without-losing-rankings/ and had a question which the team advised me to post here.

I wanted to clarify, when Joost says ‘keep the same URL’ does he mean

    1. keep the same URL of the page that the images are on? or
    2. keep the same URL of the image itself?

If (2), I’m not sure that this is possible? Certainly not through wordpress media upload, which creates a new image url? How would you do this?

Hope you can help clarify and explain

    thank you, Sarah

    Hello @sarahdn,

Thanks for your question. It’s possible to keep the same URL while changing the image. You will give the new image the same name as the old image then upload it to the uploads folder by accessing your website files via FTP. You should be prompted to replace the file.

Do let me know how that goes.

Hi @maybellyne thank you, apologies for the slow reply.
Does it need to be via FTP only, or could you achieve this by uploading to media library and changing the url to the original via a File Renaming plugin?

I didn’t test either options but you can give it a try
