Updating Data In MYSQL for Posts

If I wanted to update some data in the Posts on WordPress, can I simply write into the columns on the records I want to update? For example, let’s say I wanted to update post_excerpts, can I insert something into that column and it will flow through to WordPress or does any change on the original post require post_meta files?
