• Updating to 3.1.1 seemed to cause my blog to spawn a zillion httpd processes, running the server completely out of memory and making the site not run. Weirdly enough, it seems to happen the first time anyone leaves a comment.

I disabled all plugins and rebooted. It did not solve the issue. Does anyone know what is happening? Does anyone know how I can do useful diagnosis of the issue?

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I removed all plugins from the folder as well as disabling all of them. I hadn’t thought of changing the theme. I am using a Pagelines commercial theme. I am reticent about changing that, because because I’ll lose widget data (or at least that seems to be what happens when I switch themes that don’t have common widgets).

If the theme is the cause, I still need to know how to diagnose that.

The theme vendors are the first point of contact in that case.

Yeah, I’m thinking on how not to destructively test that. This theme has worked through several updates without a problem.

Try setting up a local install and test the theme locally?
