• Some of my blog posts are SIX YEARS old and are in need of an update. My question: should I change the “published on” date in the publish panel? Will that help with SEO or is it a no-no?

    Would love some feedback. Thanks.

  • It depends on your theme. WordPress stores published date and modified date. The theme might show only published date, but if it’s a good theme, it would show the updated date in a format that the search engines see (and the user typically does not). If you have Google Webmasters, then it will complain that there is no “updated” value if the theme is not supplying it. If you don’t have that complaint, Google is happy and uses the updated date however it uses it.
You can look in the source code of your page and see if it is there.

Be aware that WordPress uses the publish date to sort the posts.

Interesting. I am running a child theme of 2012. I’ll try to check the code. Thanks.
