• Hi,

Last year I created a product based site in WordPress (I’ve been doing the site for years but never before in WordPress).

Every year many of the products change and there are new ranges etc. for ‘the new year’.

Before WordPress I’d do all the changes to the site offline then, when I was happy with it, upload the new site and overwrite the old in one go – voila!

Is there any way of continuing this scenario (or simulating it) now that I’m using WordPress or do I need to do all the updates to the live site in the public gaze?

    Thanks.

  • Hello, Who are you hosting your site with? There are hosts like siteground and wpengine that offer staging areas where you can make changes and then push the changes to the live server. The only thing is you need to be careful that orders do not get lost. Usually the hosting support department will be able to help with this as long as you are using WooCommerce for the ecommerce section of your WordPress site.

Hope this help as least in the slightest. Good luck with updating your shop!

    Hi,

    Thanks for this, very useful.

The site I was referring to is hosted by Heart but since your reply I have been looking at the two ‘specialist’ hosting companies that you mentioned and can see big advantages to having them host a future project I am going to be involved with. They seem to offer several other advantages, not just the staging area.

(I also noticed that Siteground charge a lot less than Wpengine for what looks like a similar product.)

The major difference between SiteGround and WPEngine is that SiteGround gives you cPanel and Email support where WPEngine is just WordPress hosting. With WPEngine you will need a separate email host such as Google Apps for Business or GoDaddy’s email hosting service. Personally, I like SiteGround not because of their price being so much less but moreover because their tech support team tends to be more helpful when you know the correct questions to ask and they also read the tickets a little closer and see what you are saying before replying. As a developer, when I am posting support tickets I always make sure to inform the representative on the other end that I am a developer and with WPEngine I have had situations where I have to tell them I am a developer three to four times before they give me a useful answer based on the knowledge I already have.

We are always happy to help, after all that is what the forums are here for. Do not hesitate to come back if you have any further questions.
