• I am in need of some serious help. I am a novice with wordpress because someone else set my blog up for me. I tried on my own to update it several times, but just couldn’t get it accomplished. Now I can’t even get into it. I have been trying for months to login, but all of my passwords fail. I tried resetting the password several months ago, but the code they kept sending would not work. I’m worried that my version is so old that nothing works anymore. Trying to reset the password today leaves me with the “check your email” message, but then I receive nothing.

I considered abandoning this blog all together and starting up a brand new one, but I don’t want to lose what I already have in this blog. Is there anyone out there patient enough to help me out or will I just need to cut my losses and move on?

  • You may be able to find the version number from your browser for any WP site; there are various methods — but as an unmodified WP site holds the information in the META, the simple way is to load the site then chose /tools/Page Info in Firefox ( other browsers will have something similar ). I just did it for my site and the first information was WordPress 3.2.1.

Use this to find out which hosting company serves your site:

    https://www.whoishostingthis.com/

    Or this one:

    https://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph

Someone at the host may be able to help, if you can prove ownership — although the last is not always necessary with gullible companies.

Add Edit: the domain extension ( tld ) has no difference in any way: they merely exist to get more money for namesellers for selling the same name a dozen ways.

Do you have access to your database?

If you post your url at least we can find out who is hosting your wordpress.

Thanks for all your continued support…am at work so only have a minute to reply.

The host is SoftLayer,Inc…I will try them later.

    Meanwhile, the URL is chattykricket.familytables.org

You have wordpress 2.5.1 and I see you using subdomain name of familytables.org so looks like you may not have any access to server or database.

    The domain name is hosted
    Registrar : Public Interest Registry
    Referral URL : https://www.pir.org/
    Whois Server : org.whois-servers.net
    Nameservers : ns2.speedydns.net
    ns1.speedydns.net

Well, I got into my blog! Yeah!!!

The original person was able to get in and change the password for me. Now, however, I am trying to figure out how to update it. Since there is a subdomain can I still upload it to the server?

    I hate being technologically challenged!!!

You have a subdomain name so question is that do you have server log in info or ftp log in info.

May be he is the only one can update as he may have super admin rights as looks like he may be using multisite setup.

Just a thought: if you can get someone to download the database of the blog, you could install WordPress 2.5.1 elsewhere on your own hosting ( buying a domain name ), import the database to the new install; then update it and run the blog according to your own control…

Or even, were you willing to accept the lack of control of using a hosting platform, you might make an export file on the old blog and import it into a new wordpress.com blog as mentioned here.

I asked him about that, but he acted like it didn’t make a difference. He thought I should just have a link to automatically update, but all I have is a download page come up.

Is there some way to move my blog to a place where I have easier access?

    Do you own the domain?
Are you using a paid hosting service of your own or a free-hosting provided by someone?

If you do not have both of the above, there is very little you can do in the present situation.

free hosting by someone else. He acts like I should be able to do anything I want with it…

You are avoiding answering what I asked.

No I am not avoiding it, I don’t know what to tell you. Someone else had a website, they set me up with my blog and a way to access it from their site. They basically abandoned the original site and here I am…as I have said all along, all I have ever done is login to it, write and mediate all the ridiculous spam comments. That’s it…simple as that.

I wish I could tell you more, but the person who set it up for me isn’t telling me anything else either.

So, what I understand is: It is owned and hosted by someone else. You did certain things in that blog. Now they either abandoned it, or do not care about it. Am I right?
