• Hello,
I updated my WordPress to version 3.8.1 a week ago, it seems the update went fine (no error messages), however after that some of the admin pages don’t open – the page cannot be displayed. Only three of them are affected: themes.php, update-core.php and plugins.php all give the error message immediately. Everything else in the admin area works fine and the web site is accessible.
    I tried the following:
    – remove .htaccess – no change
    – remove the plugins folder – no change
    – the permissions for those 3 files seem to be ok – read is allowed for all users

Please, give me some ideas, because I’m stuck ??

    Thanks!

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Hello and thanks for the advice. I tried all your suggestions, unfortunately there is no improvement ??

I noticed two strange things – when I switched to the default theme the site was not displaying anything, just a white window. Anyway, the admin area was still accessible, but the problem was not solved.
I replaced all files from a fresh downloaded WordPress – no umprovement.
I’ve disabled all plugins by the phpMyAdmin method – nothing ??
When I ran the upgrade script it said that no upgrade is needed, because I already have the latest version.

Maybe I should wait for 3.9 and update again to see if it will fix the problem.

That won’t help. The issue is not within WordPress itself but is specific to your site. Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.
