    Hi

I need help. I was hoping to learn how to update wordpress by working on a subdomain site that wouldn’t be jeopardized if I made mistakes.

I had prepared properly by backing up and following the instructions for deleting only the appropriate parts of the old wordpress files.

Problem is when I uploaded the new wordpress files they accidentally loaded into and overwrote my root file for my main website/blog. I did not have a back up of this site.

Is everything gone? Or can the files be retrieved from the database? The original theme and details are gone but I wanted to change that anyway so that part is O.K.

The site that was affected is https://www.womenandweight.com and my host is Bluehost.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I have now tried to upgrade the installation to see if I might establish a connection with the original database. At first I would get a message that everything was updated O.K.

So I opened the config.php file to see what was in there. The user name needed changing. So I did that.

Now I get the error establishing connection with database message. Am I on the right track? Or will there be nothing in the database anymore even if I have the config.php set up correctly?

Everything was ok and yet you changed it. I don’t understand. Can you explain?

And did you save the original database at all?

My apologies. I wasn’t at all clear. When the upgrade said everything was O.K. that’s when I discovered everything was lost. An empty wordpress page would open with the default theme. It did have my blog name and the indication of files. But it included an error message on the lower right telling me that a connection to the database could not be made. (What you will see if you go to https://www.womenandweight.com).

That’s when I went to the config.php file to see if it had the correct information. The user name was wrong. I changed it.

Now when I try to do the upgrade, I get the error message:

    “Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost….etc.”

I didn’t even get this before. It seems to me that I might be closer to establishing a connection with the original database?

I seem to have all of the correct information in the config.php file. Does that mean the original database is gone? No, I do not have a backup because this is not the file/domain I had intended to be working with. (See first post).

    Thanks,

    Lori

From what I can see now, you have an install, but parts are missing. The site is not loading properly because it gets to a call in the sidebar which is not completed. This is most likely because of a plugin you originally had in place and is either now deleted or deactivated. You need to put it back in place.

Alternatively, remove that call in the sidebar for now and put it back in later.

Once you do that, we can proceed to the next step.

I think the quickest thing for me to do would be the later. That is, remove the call to the sidebar. But I don’t know how. I can’t access the dashboard at this point.

If you have any quick tips I would appreciate it. In the mean time I will upload all of the plugins I had been using. However, won’t I have the same problem of not being able to reach the dashboard to activate them?

Thank you Shadow for your help,
