    Hi Yoast Team,

How can I update from WP 4.9.12 and YOAST 10.1.3., to recent version of WP and Yoast, without breaking my site, or the data and settings in the Yoast plugin?

Recent version of Yoast plugin is minimum operating from WP 5.2.

If I update to WP 5.3 first, it is not compatible with Yoast 10.1.3, while if I
update to Yoast 12.5.1 first, it is not compatible with WP 4.9.12.?
Guess, both solution might lead to data loss or operating maladjustments.

    Please advise a proper solution.

    thx

It’s big difference in versions. It’s recommended to you update WP core at least one version between 4.9 and 5.3 (5.1 for example). Also, please make full backup before any update.

Yoast 12.3 should work on 4.9 and 5.1/5.2 without issues (if you try direct update to 5.3). I think that your plugin is already updated to 12.4 if you are receiving notices and you don’t see new updates for Yoast (your other topic). So, maybe you need to downgrade it to 12.3 to avoid this notice until you update WP core.

    Hi Sasa,

    Thanks for the help!

Well, I’m sure I do use Yoast SEO version 10.1.3. and not yet updated to 12.4., but I receive notices as mentioned in other topic.

As per your advice I Will then
-first update Yoast to 12.3, which is compatible with WP 4.9
-second update WP to 5.2, which is compatible with Yoast 12.3
-third update Yoast to 12.4, which is compatible with WP 5.2
    -finally update WP to 5.3

    Am I right?

    thx

It could work, but it’s better to update from version WP 4.9 first to WP 5.0 or 5.1. Also, I think that “middle update” isn’t possible without FTP. I’m using wp-cli for this kind updating, so I’m not sure how it works via WP Dashboard.

If you want to directly update to 5.3 then it’s also possible because you can update Yoast SEO just after update of WP. I think that Yoast SEO 12.3 was compatible with 5.3 beta, so it’s enough for update.

If you decide to do direct update then please make full backup (and check FTP access or other recovery methods) because it’s big change and maybe another plugin could cause some issues.

If you want to keep WP 4.9 for a while then you could upgrade (or downgrade) to 12.3 (please check current version in Dashboard/Plugins). Version 12.4 will show the notice about ended support.
