  • You mean version 4.6, not 4.0.

    You don’t have to, but its best that you do. At some point in time you are going to have to anyway. If you wait too long and several versions go by and you experience a problem, you aren’t going to know which preceding version caused the problem.

    Problems can arise when the plugin or theme is incompatible with the WordPress version. You want to know if they exist now, not later. Plugin/theme developers do not always update their source code so you have to take that into consideration.

    Therefore, always backup your database and WordPress directory. There are plugins that can assist you in backing up and database tools like phpMyAdmin that you can use to export the database.

    You should get in the habit of backing up your WordPress database regularly anyway.

    It’s always a good idea to keep your software updated.

    I don’t want to use 4.6 because my Contact Form 7 plug-in doesn’t work with 4.6. I just downgraded, but now when I try to log in to my Dashboard, I get a notice that Database Update is required. How do I bypass that?

    Are you using the latest version of the Contact Form 7 plugin (ver. 4.5)?

    Tara, I am using the latest version of CF7.

    I have temporarily resolved the situation. I called the Bluehost helpline and they said that the database upgrade would not update the wordpress version back to 4.6 as I feared. So all works now although I’m forced to use the earlier version of WordPress until the CF7 plug-in is made compatible with WordPress 4.6

    I recommend asking in this plugin’s dedicated support sub-forum for better results so its developers and users can help you with this. Tell them what issue you are having with the plugin so that they can take action as appropriate:

    I’ve done that as well. Thanks.

    @marshask,

    If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.
