The current description of the plugin includes most features that are pro features.

For the free version, since this update,it no longer has:
    1. Template label -there is none now – there are only link letters
    2. Link letters are of your default font, and is set to 8pt. Depending on your default font, it can be so tiny, that the download letters are almost unreadable.
    3. You can no longer choose an Icon. The icon is the media type icon.
    4. The Icon is not attached to the link. It does not start the download process. It is just an icon. Visitors will click and go nowhere.
    5. The title of your file is now visible, in bold above the tiny download link. You have to go into the code and remove it. Same with the file size. And I have no idea about code.

This new updated 2.7 version is now a simple, stripped to the bones download plugin. Not even pretty.
If you want any features at all, you need to go to the pro.

It seems to me that this whole new redesign is simply a way to force one to buy their pro version.

The free version does not look attractive to draw a site visitor to download. Which is what we are looking for.

P.S. The five stars are before the upgrade.

It was a phenomenal plugin. Basic, but looked good to site visitors and worked. Loved it. Was thrilled with it before.

The update brings it to only 3 stars. Functional to a point.

I know that the developers tried it out on their site and had users with better experiences. But, this was so unexpected here.

I hope that the developers bring back some of the basic features it had before as a free download plug in.

    Thank you.

not actually, please check here https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/downloads/free-add-ons/, you will get lot more features then previous version, some feature those are not required for all user, we converted those as add-on, you can download those from the list and install.

1 & 2. With next update, we are adding link template editor, but for now you can edit download-manager/templates/link-template-default.php for edit the template or you can use https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/download/wpdm-button-templates/

    3. You can choose icon from Edit File window >> Package Settings >> Icon tab

    4. Icon also was not attached to link in previous version, but I’ll add that with future update

    5. the file is here download-manager/templates/link-template-default.php, if you want to remote link, replace[page_link]with[title]` , valid template tag list mentioned here https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/doc/templates/creating-a-new-template/ ( steps may not match, just check template tags )

But still v2.7 has lots more features then v2.6.9, just come here https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/downloads/free-add-ons/ and install add-ons as per your need, they are free too.

I am sorry to say Shaon but janeandboucle is right with her opinion.

The version 2.7 may have more features. But for many people it was so unexpected change and has brought them more troubles than advantages. If a customer calls us after update “hey your download section doesn’t work” and we didn’t change anything then something must be wrong with your plugin. You are a good programmer, we all know and we also respect your work.

Making plugin compatible with previous version and offering admin to convert would be expectable solution from an author of plugin with 800.000+ downloads.

PS on previous. I am sorry for the 1 star rating you’ve got from me. The update is worth 3 stars, but only because of the previous version and your effort. I hope the next version will be worth of 5 stars again. Thank you!

Shoan: Thank you again for responding.

1 & 2. Regarding the link label template – I did visit your add on page and downloaded the free button template. It makes it look more like a downloadable file – so much better!

    3. I have visited the Icon Tab a dozen times today and tried to change the icon from the media file default to any one of the others. Nothing changes. Always still with the media file default icon.

    4. Re changes re icon being linked – I noticed in the forum on your site that this is a big request. Looking forward to this one.

    5. I went into the code and removed the title and the file size. Seems to have worked. Found the recipe for this on a thread from your site forum.

Shaon – you have mentioned in many threads that the migration notice etc..were given at the end of when the update installed. I don’t think you are aware that we (at least me for sure, and I saw others say this too) never saw a notice that we needed to migrate.

It would really help, and probably help you too the next time you do something big to provide some guidance with such a big change.
Same with the button add on. I like it. Did not know it existed until you mentioned it.

    Up to 4 stars!

Final changes would make it 5 stars.

Thank you again for visiting this forum and review section so much today. It is good to know someone is helping.

#3. checking the issue and updating with 24 hours
#4. Icon can be linked easily for the files where you didn’t use password protection. to do that, simply replace [icon] with <a href="[download_url]">[icon]</a> in file download-manager/templates/link-template-default.php
