• Hello,

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I’m a bit of a novice. I have recently upgraded my wordpress to 3.3.1 (not upgraded since 2005 before that) and I have a theme update I have not installed because I was afraid it would override my custom theme. Here is what it says below (boldface added)

    *************

    Themes
The following themes have new versions available. Check the ones you want to update and then click “Update Themes”.

Please Note: Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.

You have version installed. Update to 1.7.2.

Can anyone tell me if it is safe to update the theme or if I risk loosing my custom theme by doing so? I have been experiencing duplicate text on my pages/posts which someone in the troubleshooting forum told me may be due to my non-upgraded theme.

Here’s the site with custom theme: https://www.heatherwatts.com/

    Thank you!

    Nice graphics on that link!

Short answer: yes, if you update the default theme to version 1.7.2 then you will probably know huge, crippling, and debilitating pain and suffering.

    Longer explanation:

That’s a very customized theme. It’s using the default (Kubrick) theme directory and it looks like the Kubrick images are still there. So WordPress thinks it’s the old default theme and wants to update it. At a minimum you’ll lose your style.css file and any customization within that directory.

If you do not maintain regular backups of your files and database, this would be a good time to start. ??

Backup and being able to restore database and files: It’s the best safety net you can have.

So you have two choices. 1) You could ignore the upgrade notices or 2) you can try to identify the changes and then create a new theme from those changes.

If you opt for #2 (and I think you should) you might want to consult with whoever made up that great looking theme for you.

Edit: Excellent job bringing that installation up to 3.3.1 BTW.

    Thank you so much Jan,
    I appreciate the quick response.

I’m glad I went with my gut and didn’t install the upgrade before checking. ?? I have someone that did the 3.3.1 upgrade for me who should be able to re-build the theme for me along the lines of “option #2.” Extra expense but after seven years without an upgrade I think I got off pretty easy!

    Many thanks again. ??
