Right now the sitemap seems to have the last published date for a post. On my blog there are a lot of updates and discussion in the comments of the post, and I would like the last modified date to reflect that. Is that possible?

The Yoast SEO plugin creates sitemaps on the fly which means that sitemaps are updated automatically when you add, edit, or delete content. If that doesn’t happen, it could be that the cache functionality on your site prevents the sitemaps from updating automatically. Please clear your server’s cache and disable all caching for all .xml and all .xsl files. You may find this kb article helpful: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/sitemap-does-not-update/

I believe that the mod date changes when the post content changes – that’s not the issue. The issue is that comments are also shown on the same page, so although the post content almost never changes, usually there are new comments on the page every day. So with the way it works right now, the mod date might show a date from 2012 – yet the page displays new comments as of yesterday.

    Hello ccoulson,

We understand that you would like the “Last Modified” date on the sitemap to be updated when a new comment is added to a post.
Thank you for suggesting a new feature for one of our plugins. You can create a feature request for this here so our developers can consider this when planning updates.
