I wanted to get opinions about updating my Permalinks. The new WordPress has better options for permalink structures.

I have been using the following permalink structures for my websites:

    • /%postname%/%year%/%monthnum%/
    • /%category%/%postname%/%post_id%/

And want to change all of them to:

    • /%category%/%posttitle%/

If I update my permalinks will I lose my SEO ranking for my old URLs? I know there are ways to redirect and use plugins to automatically do this, just want to make sure before I do this that the cons of updating don’t out weight the pros.

  • You pretty much know the pros of doing this, as well as the cons. If your URL’s change, then it will affect your SEO for a short time (could be a few days, could be months) until the SE’s re-index all of your pages again.

There’s a few good 301-redirect plugins out there that can help. They let you set up redirections from old URL’s to new URL’s, so the old pages are not “lost”, just moved, as far as SE’s are concerned.

To do this or not will come down to how much work it will be to get the rewrite rules going. If there’s only a few, then go for it. If there’s a few 100, it’s a big job but probably worth it over the time. If there’s a few 1,000… bribe someone else to do it for you! I’d hate to try to do anything that big myself.
