I have just recently started having this problem. When I try to update a page I am pushed to my 404 error page. This doesn’t happen with posts, only pages. I have recently changed my wp-admin htaccess, then changed it back. I have tried deleting it to see if that was the problem with no result.

I have tried turning off my plugins and that doesn’t work. I have re-upgraded my wordpress and that did not resolve the issue either. Any suggestions? I tried looking in my error log, but it was cramed full of stuff so I deleted it and now the server is not creating a new log like it usually does so that option is off the table.

    Help!

Oh, I have also tried the .htaccess fix mentioned in some similar support forum posts without avail…

I am having the same problem with my pages. They were working, now they’re not. I also tried the .htaccess fix.

Does anyone have any help?! THANK YOU!

I am having this problem, as well.

Creating a new page or updating a previously existing page results in a 404 error.

The same does not happen when updating or creating posts.

    I am running WP 2.9.1

Hello? Anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

Just updated to 2.9.2 and still getting this problem. Near as I can tell it is a problem with the page.php somewhere, either in the code itself or some combination of code/SQL/etc. It is directing all “Update Page” commands to a 404 error. Posts are updating just fine, and no other errors are apparent on the blog.

Can someone help with this problem, please? I’ve been trying to figure out but it doesn’t make any sense:

    • I have tried replacing the page.php without success.
    • I have tried turning off all my plugins without success.
    • I have tried repairing and optimizing my databases without success.

It’s only effecting one of the worpress blogs I run: https://steadystaterevolution.org

    Ideas? Help!

Okay, here’s a weird twist. It is only the About page that will not update. I just deleted it permanently and it will not let me create a new “About” page with the same information. So, there is obviously something sinister in the code of that page. Everyone else should double check your pages, make sure that this issue is not happening to a specific page – if so, it might be content-related.

Okay, another twist: certain things pasted into a post or page will not allow it to update without going to 404 error. It happens with just blank text pasted into the html (so no phantom divs). Ideas?

This is happening for me as well. Exactly as described above. It is only happening to one of my WordPress pages, and it seems to be due to some content in the page itself, because when all of the content is removed, the page will update.

I have tried creating a new page with the same content and I get the same result.

I have tried many different ways of pasting the content in, removing all formatting, copying and pasting from notepad and wordpad, using the “paste as plain text” and “paste from Word” WP editor buttons… none of this has worked.

I managed to get it to update with just the first sentence, but as soon as I add the second sentence (whether pasted or typed in), the page will not update, I get a 404.

I never figured out what was causing the problem, but I worked around it by creating a custom page template with the content I wanted in the template itself.

Then I just deleted all of the content out of that page and changed it to use the custom template I had created. It updated. Of course I need to edit the template now any time I want to change the page, but I’m not sure what else to do.

I have updated to the newest version of wordpress and I am still having this issue. Ideas?

I have the same problem and I’ve tried everything: Disabling plugins (Twitter Tools, Super-Cache, etc.); Updating and reinstalling WordPress; Rewriting htaccess (mod_security, etc.); updating permalinks… Nothing works!

Everything started with the last WordPress update. First problem: Twitter Tools (plugin) stopped to work. Then I started to get this 404 errors when I’m publishing/editing posts and pages… I’m going mad! Any new idea?

    Thank’s.

I figured out the problem. It has to do with your hosts security settings. For some reason it didn’t like the use of the word “from” in my posts/pages. I contacted my host service and told them the issue, they fixed it without problem.

That’s weird. Because I only write in portuguese and spanish, I mean, I don’t use english in my weblog. I never write “from” in my posts. “/

Well, I’m still struggling with this issue. But thank’s, Joshua.

    Yurivs,

It is not necessarily that specific word, each host system has a different security settings. You’ll have to try writing the post/page word by word, hitting update as you do, until it yields the error. That will tell you which word is causing the problem.

    Best of luck!

    Cheers,
    Joshua
