In spite of 4 months of pushback we allowed indie developer to use WordPress for new corp site. When we received “critical” update announcement we tried to update from dashboard…now entire site appears broken and designer wants to charge to get it back.

  • Although there isn’t quite enough information to properly determine what might have happened, if I were to venture a guess, the developer you hired likely edited some core WordPress files instead of making changes and custom functions through the theme files.

As a WordPress developer, I would never recommend editing core WP files as your odds of mucking something up during an update increase exponentially.

Do you have a link to the site in question?

Is there a question you wanted to ask?

Dashboard said upgrade failed…thank gawd it reverted back and was not permanently broken. Yes, Esmi, my question (besides WTF), is what resources are available to update a site to make it secure, without having to start from scratch, and yes, Space Dog, there were many months of “hard coding” as our external developer described it. We thought it was to justify the never ending delays, or the cost over runs on the project.

    See Hardening_WordPress.

there were many months of “hard coding” as our external developer described it.

That doesn’t automatically mean that there were any core hacks. Given that an upgrqade from 2.9.2 to 3.0.4 would have pretty much wiped out a core hack, I think it’s far more likely that you had a faulty theme or plugin.
