I just now attempted to update from 1.16.31 to 1.16.33 and got this error:

Update failed: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN”> 500 Internal Server Error Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

    Running WordPress Version 5.5.1.

    Please advise. Thank you.

Now things have gotten worse. First, WP reported that it had deactivated UpdraftPlus. Then I tried to reinstall. Now that has failed with this error:

Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.

    Please advise. Thank you.

    Hi,

It appears that the installation has failed partway. The folder still exists on your WP install thus the error “Installation failed: Destination folder already exists” To fix, please delete the “updraftplus” folder in the “wp-content/plugins” folder and re-install the plugin.

If you continue to get the same issue, please check with your host why the installation gets cut-off.

Alternatively, you can manually install the plugin via FTP/cPanel File Manager. Download the plugin, unzip and upload to “wp-content/plugins” folder. Then activate the plugin from your WP dashboard.

Deleting the folder and reinstalling seems to have worked. Thank you.

Interestingly, I tried the exact same update on my “staging” site, and got the exact same error. I’ll now have to go through the folder delete/reinstall process on that site as well.

    Hi,

Glad you were able to successfully install it on your main site.

Can you try checking with your host if they see any errors in their PHP error log? Possibly an upload size limit set on your host.

My site is hosted by Dreamhost.com.

I have no idea how to check the php error log – in fact, it seems that logging is disabled by default: https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/214894197.

There is another support page re increasing the php memory size: https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/214893937.

I’m at a loss otherwise, but, for the time being, things are working!

My attempt to update to 1.16.42 failed again today. Same error as above. If you can guide me as to where I might find the PHP Error Log, I’d be happy to supply it.
