• Please help.

I have read through your documentation but have been grappling with a host that seems very inexperienced, has numerous techs handling the ticket, they don’t read thru past conversations and everything just gets worse…

My upgrade crashed before it completed.
They reinstated a previous version of my database but then it forced me to update to complete 5.0 – so that left me with the compatibility issues.

Through MUCH effort and no help from them I was finally able to actually LOG IN (I couldnt even do that) when I replaced the scriptloader.php with an older copy.

THEN I deactivated every plugin and reverted my theme to twenty fourteen
(the only Twenty version I had)

The site is now giving me login errors (I CANT GET IN)

AS well as errors on the site itself –
(post photos but no content – just errors –

On the login page i have errors at the top …

Warning: call_user_func_array() expects parameter 1 to be a valid callback, function 'wp_default_packages' not found or invalid function name in /home/unrxultj/public_html/bcr8tive/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php on line 286

and on the login itself it states:

ERROR: Cookies are blocked due to unexpected output. For help, please see this documentation or try the support forums.

Please help, I am at a loss as to what to do, this is a pretty big site, 7 years worth of content – and as mentioned, a very inexperienced host.

It’s probably best if you do a manual update at this point. You may have a mix of versions or an incomplete setup.

Thank you Steven, I have forwarded that info to the host.

They haven’t given me the ability to do much myself.

The stopped me from being able to make my own backups some time ago.

I can/t access thru FTP either – they say I can but when I tell them it won’t let me in, it never gets addressed. (I will be going back to a more reliable host asap – I never had such issues when I had the other… ugh)

CAN I ASK YOU … what would happen if we were to completely remove everything in that domain folder? Just as if I went over to another host… AND ALSO revert back to an earlier version of WordPress – until all of these bugs are ironed out.

I AM SOOOooo sorry I hit update prior to checking the forums and especially on my large site with 7 years worth of content and it being monetized and the holidays being my money maker months (shoot me now)

Probably things would be OK, assuming you move everything correctly.

Thanks that is what I was thinking too – time can’t be my issue at this point since the site has been down for 3 days already …

and if this host doesn’t get it moving, I am going to HAVE to move to a fresh one sooner than I planned – which will leave me with a blank slate, a backed up database … and all of my content. (THAT has all been backed up)

would you believe this host doesn’t allow me to back up my databases myself?
    SMH

I dont know how they have good reviews, it’s been a horrible experience.

I use “backwpup” on almost all of my client sites. It does a very nice job backing up files and the database and shipping the backups “off-site” to Dropbox.

Even if you have a ‘complete’ backup with database in hand I’d be very suspicious of it after all this.

I’d try to ftp in to there and rename the directory everything is in currently and recreate my WordPress directory.

Install WordPress then kill Gutenberg for now (since that looks to be where your problems are coming from according to what I can see on the website) and restore that database onto a new database. There’s a plugin to revert back to the classic editor.

BTW: when all this is over and the dust settles you need to consider moving your DNS over to CloudFlare. There’s a tiny little issue that I don’t care for where you are now.

CloudFlare will read your present DNS and configure itself then give you the info to point your DNS server settings to them. Easy, peasy and you’ll be on one of the most robust, well maintained, and well-connected DNS systems in the world.

It’s a free service and should remain that way.

JNashHawkins – I AM suspicious of it. I have others, earlier versions as well & stored locally *though all from since I moved to that host which I’d like to kill myself for doing now*

I am in Limbo at the current moment waiting on them yet AGAIN – saying they are going to follow up on the links I sent them – from here and the how to site I located – but I cant trust them at this point, they havent been able to follow through their own tickets!

Ive had one tech after another responding to me as though they havent read it – and one even had the audacity to ask me my url!? SMH (20 emails later)

I’m with you on the issue with who I’m with and it isn’t “tiny” by any stretch of the word.

    Steven Stern:

This particular host has thwarted efforts to backup my own databases citing “security issues” and I have had to rely on THEM to do them for me
Yesterday when reinstating the database, we FIRST used the one they provided me and it was outdated and missing posts – BUT I had located one they had saved in my root folder and when they used THAT One, I was at least back up to date on the last post I left off on…

For a few dollars I shot myself in the foot moving – and I’m probably going back to where I was – where it was reliable and I had more control over what belongs TO ME.

Thank you Steven… I’m currently waiting on what seems to be their escalation to a different tier tech (Lord only knows why it took 4 days for THAT) that I had asked for repeatedly over the last DAYS — omg.

The links are helpful. I will look into them. I had thought I would go back to the Dad – since I’d been with them for decades and never had any issues except jacking my rates.

If it’s the host I think it is then I really liked them when I was there but I was on several VPS and had little need of support.

This ‘no backup due to security issues’ makes me think you’re on a host who is reselling that fine company’s services.

    Thread Starter bcr8tive

    (@bcr8tive)

I dont know if they’re reselling, I tend to think not but can’t be sure.

They had great reviews and still do but I’m beginning to wonder how…

They are finally doing what I told them you all said – and we will see how it goes…. I am waiting, still.

Up til then they didnt seem to even be following the ticket – some didnt even to seem to be reading my responses to it – and I swear a dozen people were in and out of it.

Its just been insane to me. ??

    (@bcr8tive)

    Hi again.

Wanted to post a quick update to thank you both, Steven and JNashHawkins for your help and advice. I finally got a tech that listened & followed your advice – (and my suggestion to do a clean installation in a separate folder)

The site is back up and running, though it’s the previous version.

I’m not sure when I will be venturing into 5.0 after this debacle.

I can’t be sure if it was the failed installation or if it was 5.0 yet.

    Too pooped to find out!
