Sorry for the slow response. I’ve got some info for you here.
We’ve been looking more into the MailChimp issue with double Subscribers. It’s not an issue on our end, but with their API. We want to see what they can do, and will bring it to their attention. We don’t know that we can address this in an update without changes to their API so that will take some time.
As for the plugin being heavy, I can help with that. We do rely on a lot of admin_ajax calls for a smooth frontend experience, and for tracking. You can disable the tracking to cut down on a lot of that though.

Otherwise it’s quite a lean plugin. We’ve done some extensive benchmarking compared to our competitors. If you think it’s having a huge site impact, we’d suggest using P3 Plugin Performance Profiler, or WP_Query_Moniter to try and narrow down the cause. There could be a conflict or something unique to your site. Please let us know what you find.
