We took over a website and updated WordPress and all its plugins.
The last plugin to update was WP-RSS-Aggregator plugin.

The Upgrade from 4.11.3 to 4.16 went smooth; but not for production.
The production server had an extra load of 300%.
We performed a rollback of this update and investigated the issue.

It seems that with the same RSS data the WP-RSS-Aggregator generated an extra 80+ queries per item. So if there are 2 items in a feed there are 160+ extra queries, etc.

The site currently has 1500+ RSS feeds setup which run every 15 minutes, so the extra load of queries per item caused the site to break down.

What caused these extra queries (between versions) and how can we decrease the amount of queries?

  • We wouldn’t recommend updating from 4.11.3 directly to the current version of 4.17.2.

v4.11.3 is over a year and half old, and the intermediate updates would have been needed to adjust a lot of aspects when they’re installed. The load you’re experiencing could well be caused by skipping intermediate upgrades.

Here’s the upgrade path we would recommend for v4.11.3

    4.11.3 –> 4.12.3
    4.12.3 –> 4.14
    4.14 –> 4.17.2

Hence, it would be best for you to roll back your site to the version that used WP RSS Aggregator v4.11.3 and follow the above upgrade path.

You can get specific versions from the WP RSS Aggregator plugin page. Click on Advanced View on the right (just above the ratings), and on the next page, scroll down to “Previous Versions”.
