Update a downloaded theme but the newer version doesn't install

I have WordPress 3.80 in Ubuntu 12.04 using local host. I downloaded a newer version of a theme. I downloaded the theme then extracted the file to /home/user/wordpress/wp-content/themes. I go to Appearance Editor Edit Themes and the Theme’s Stylesheet (style.css) indicates the older version not the newer downloaded version of the theme. I clicked the browser refresh but that has now effect. The Dashboard still indicates a need to update the theme.
