I had to update both wordfence and yoast seo plugins on my site. wordfence has caused issues in the past, so my sop is to disable wordfence before starting any updates. I did that first.

I then went to update yoast and the site went down. I have no idea if wordfence was involved in that issue, but bring it up in case it’s relevant.

My sop next is to remove the plugin directory for the one that failed, so I removed the yoast one. The site was still down and since wordfence has caused issue updating other plugins in the past, I removed that directory too.

The site was working now. I installed the 2 plugins and activated – still working.

I noticed the wordfence update was from 7.1.18 to 7.1.19, but now I had 7.1.18 and there was no update showing as needed. I even went on your site and it shows the lastest update as 7.1.18.

Was there an issue with 7.1.19 and it was taken down?

  • Yes my site is broken with 1.19 and see at another website there is version 1.20

    But still one site broken!
    Cant in the admin website…
    Only ftp.
What do I need to do?
Delete the wordfence directory? And then the website is running again?

    usually first turn debugging on:
in sftp, edit the wp-config.php file – look for the line:
    define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false );
change false to true and try the site

normally you would see one or more error messages and possibly the site with error messages showing in places. I dod not get error messages when I turned debugging on so I removed the wordfence directory in wp-content/plugins and tried the site again. That fixed it – then installed wordfence again

    Hi @csfolmer,

There was a plugin commit error when we released version 7.1.19 and shortly after that we released vrsion 7.1.20 to resove this. You can see this in on the changelog page.

Wordfence should not interfere with the update of any plugins. You will notice at the top of The WordPress Updates page, “Important: before updating, please back up your database and files. For help with updates, visit the Updating WordPress Codex page.“.

Updating plugins can cause unexpected behaviour and why it is prudent to back up your database and files first.

    Thanks.
