• Update blew out my ratings.

I was pleased to see an update for this handy plugin, which I’ve been using on a business directory for a few years, now. Some of my posts and listings have 1000+ ratings.

After I updated today, all the ratings blew out.

What I used to see was a row of 5 stars, in yellow, depending on the average rating, and immediately after was the number of votes and the average score.

After the update, the stars were gone completely, and only the text information (votes, score) remains. For instance 4.00 avg. rating (90% score) – 13 votes.

I opened up the post and where the custom fields typically displayed that numerical information, I reentered the data in the custom fields. When I did that, the stars appeared, but they were greyed out. When I click on them, I cannot vote — no votes will register by me, or any of my staff on different computers.

After that, I cleared cache, and perhaps that the worst thing I could have done, because now, every post (300+), every business listing (1200+) and every page have 0 votes, 0 stars, and 0 ratings, and the stars are all grey and do not respond to click votes.

I’ve had to deactivate the plug-in because it makes my 17-year website look like no one uses it or votes, and this surely is misleading and distressing.

    What happened, do you think?

  • Hi SIMedia …

seems to be big silence here. My problem wasn’t as big as yours. When I saw the dark stars and the ratings, now showing up in two single rows instead of one, I immediately went back to the version 2.4 …

Your work must not be gone for ever. Look for an old database backup (as last instance your Provider should have one) and find “votes” and “rating” within the table “postmeta”. Each Articel/Page should have its values. They could be recovered and reimported.

In my case the valus aren’t gone and my wishes to the programmers are a littel different:

I would be glad to get the golden stars back in one row instead aof the dark stars with written nunbers in a secon row. Since the update it realy looks not pretty anymore to me. That was the reason to went back to version 2.4. Hope there will be a response and some help … Thank you

    Hello Germany!

I did try to roll back and restore, and alas, all of my ratings and values were destroyed. We even restored the last back-up of our very extensive site, overwriting the entire site, and the ratings were all set to zero. I have no votes, no ratings, nothing. I wanted to weep, as all of those ratings were showing up in Google search results.

Perhaps we’ll find another plug-in and will slowly build the ratings back up again.

Thank you for responding. I appreciate it!

Oh my gosh — I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. Makes someone researching plugins PAUSE>>>

WARNING!! DO NOT UPDATE! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR RATINGS AND THE GOOGLE RATING STARS SNIPPET!!!

They removed the hreview-aggregate rating code and your rating stars will disappear from the SERP even if you are lucky and your ratings (votes) are still there.

I restored my website to a previous backup I had and everything works great again, I tested and revalidated the rating stars in google’s structured data testing tool as you can see here:
    https://goo.gl/MgmxPU
The hreview-aggregate rating code is validated again successfully.

If you guys updated already and you do have backups of your site, restore it back to a working 2.4 version.

Do not try and remove the new (version 3.0) plugin and try to reinstall the 2.4 version cause you will lose the rating votes of your posts. What you need to do is restore your site from a backup cause you will need your database backup too in order to make this work.

The plugin was fine and working great in version 2.4

I’m very curious what the author of this plugin has to say about all this.

@ spithash … I am not a programmer, but as far as I see for the Moment, your dramatic panicing is not helpful (except the warning to avoid an update). I just went back to version Version 2.4 and everything was ok for my site and even all new posts … after this force and back switch have their stars in google lists. I ran the test, you provided, without any error in my site: >>> https://goo.gl/4VTK4Y

    hreview-aggregate
    0 FEHLER
    0 WARNUNGEN
    1 ELEMENT

This way I remain in the oppinion, that a switch back to 2.4 ist enough, as long as you didn’t wipe “rating” and “votes” strings from your “metadata” table in database.

The realy bad thing is the silence of the makers … no idea what guys that are and what their really intentions are.

“dramatic panicing”? That is basically a warning message. Similar to all warning messages cited for so many years now worldwide. Are you from another planet? I am trying to warn people not to update because they will lose important data.

Before hating next time, take a step behind and think why would someone take the time to post in a support forum.

@ spithash … from which planet are you? I am from Earth, a little more accurate from Germany, what implies, that I am not totaly familiar with your Language, but all the time when we see people crying in UPPERCASE letters, we suppose, that they are panicking. Oh sorry. I am the living example for that case, that happens really nothing after an upgrade to 3.0 and the following downgrade to 2.4 … because I didn’t clear the database … while panicking.

The warning is ok … but where do you see ?hating“? Ok, next time or sometime, when you are on earth, we could have a beer together, to ensure you that there ist nothing hateful on ugly germans who hates UPPERCASE Letters in forums… ??
