    Hi

I was trying to find a way to install Google meta code in order to verify my site.

I’m not really very computer savvy(someone else set the site up for me years ago)and didn’t know where to find the proper place to insert the code.

So I used something called firebug. While on the home page of my site I clicked on Firebug and code came up at the bottom of the page.

The first sentence I saw was Paste your Google Webmaster Tools verification code here, so I thought great, can’t do better than that……so I pasted the strip of Google verification meta code there as directed.

I thought that was it and when I refreshed my home page there was this text Paste your Google Webmaster Tools verification code here on the top of my home page for all the world to see.

Also the code I had pasted in was no longer there, but the prompt had returned to paste the verification code in that spot.

I have no idea what happened or how to get rid of it. I learned later that you can’t save changes you make with Firebug, which begs the question, what good it is?

As I side-note, I later discovered the place to put the verification code was something called the php-header and now the site is verified.

The real problem I have now is getting rid of that unwanted text on top of my pages……….you can view it on my site https://www.ironstruck.com

You can’t miss it..it’s in a black background with white letters.

Paste your Google Webmaster Tools verification code here

    Thanks in advance.

  • I learned later that you can’t save changes you make with Firebug, which begs the question, what good it is?

Because it allows you to try out changes on the fly, to see if you are targeting the correct elements, for example. In my work as a web designer and developer, it is highly useful.

It’s possible that you were logged in to your site when you used Firebug, and you actually entered it into a theme option or edited a theme file.

    Thank you for you reply.

Yes you’re right, I was logged into my site.

I was on my home page and I was an whatever file firebug opened when I clicked on it.

I am a bit confused however. I didn’t think firebug could make actual changes.

If I go to my themes.php files would I look for that exact text in there somewhere and just delete it?

I don’t want to cause more damage to my site, because as I said, I’m just basically learning how all this works.

The problem is solved……..apparently the text was put there initially by a verification code plugin. I deleted the plugin and that fixed it.

    Cheers!
