• Hi:

I have a number of self-hosted wordpress sites. These are *NOT* run on wordpress.com.

Recently, unsolicited and unwanted ad code has begun appearing in all my posts. Rarely do I actually *SEE* these ads in the post BUT the code is frequently inserted in such a way that it breaks the formatting of my blog (inserting extra spaces, breaking text into paragraphs in mid-sentence, etc). I do NOT want ads on my site.

I’ve gone through and manually stripped the offending code from the HTML on many posts, but it will often re-appear at a later date.

My understanding was that, by running a self-hosted wordpress site, I wouldn’t be subject to the placement of unwanted ads in my blog… yet here they are. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

Here’s an example of the type of code the “magically” appears in my blog posts.

    <!– ~~ads~~ –><div style=”position:absolute;top:-200px;left:-200px;”>Routing Number UTI CREDIT UNION </div><!– ~~ads~~ –>

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

That crossed my mind, but I have very few plugins, and tend to only use those that are commercial, wildly popular, or sponsored by wordpress.

I wonder… could any of the plugins that require access to a wordpress.com account (like Akismet or Jetpack) cause this to happen? For example, if wordpress.com allows unwanted ads and I use a plugin that requires I have a wordpress.com account then, by the transitive property of geometry, does my self-hosted site get filled with unwanted ads?

Rather than disabling plugins and seeing if the unwanted ad posts no longer start appearing, can I search for any malicious code in the plugins themselves? Perhaps by doing a search in the various “edit plugin” screens? Any idea what I’d search for?

    Thanks.

    Thanks kmessinger…

Looks like I have a fresh new opportunity to learn all kinds of new things I didn’t really want to learn. ??

I really appreciate the links — they’ll help me get started wading through the issues.

Hey – i had exactly the same problem on my selfhosted blog – thing was , i only noticed it when I checked on my daughter’s laptop. we both use firefox, but i have adblock on my browser. Having checked the source code (nothing) and having run the url through https://browsershots.org/ (couldn’t see the links there) and having asked a few friends to look from their machines (they couldn’t see anything) I eventually determined it was something to do with her laptop. I cleaned it (no difference) and looked at her plugins – eventually worked out that in her addons > extensions she had a little extension called ‘Yontoo’ – now I have no idea what this was supposed to do or where it came from, but disabling this plugin removed the unwanted links – so in my case was VERY glad to report that it wasn’t a problem with my website, just adware on the laptop. PHEW! I hope you managed to fix your problem, was going to say if you still have the issue (not that I can see any ad links on your blog now) and it’s the same on other browsers/ machines maybe try re-uploading your theme…

do not apply to themselves. I cannot publish blog because of the ads – in this case – apply to – is higlighted in orange and double underlined and linked to popup ad. Have 2 of them.

@febe — if you need help, you need to start your own thread and include a link to your site.
