• When I try to use the Archives widget or the Calendar widget, I get a Gnarly-Dude 404 message for all the posts I open:

    You 404’d it. Gnarly, dude.
    Surfin’ ain’t easy, etc….

Sometimes it shows up on normal posts, but when I update the post, it goes away. Do you know how I can get rid of this message? (I’m working on changing the 404 message to something friendlier, but these posts/pages exist, and there’s no good reason to trigger a 404 message.)

    Thanks,

  • you might want to try thethesis forums since that is a paid theme

I’ve been to Thesis, and they say it’s a WordPress problem. Their advice was to enter the WordPress forums, so that’s why I’m here. Is there any way to determine which is correct?

I still haven’t figured out whether I should contact WordPress or Thesis, but I have placed the Archives and Calendar widgets on my blog (https://1stSpanish.com) so that the problem can be viewed. The Archives widget still gives the Gnarly-dude 404 message. The Calendar works fine as long as you stay in the current month, but when you go back to previous months, the offensive message appears. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It turns out that this was a WordPress matter, after all. I changed my permalink structure–simplified to the post name only–and now the Calendar and Archives widgets work just fine.

Even so, I still don’t like the Gnarly-dude 404 message and would like to strangle its drafter, it’s publisher, and anyone else involved with its creation. What a classless message. It would have been just as easy to have created something less offensive, a message that you wouldn’t have to change.

    I still don’t like the Gnarly-dude 404

you can edit theme’s 404.php to change the message – at least in most themes

simplified permalinks certainly don’t indicate a wordpress problem – more likely server or theme problem

That message you’re seeing isn’t the WordPress default.

The word Gnarly (case not important) is not present in WordPress by default.

Thanks for both answers. I am uneasy about messing around with code. Where can I go to learn how to edit the 404.php? Is there a good tutorial that you are aware of?

Look in your current theme’s folder, the theme determines how to handle 404 pages.

The file will be named 404.php , so should stick out amongst the others, the file will be located in..

    wp-content/themes/your-theme-name-here/
