• I though that to build a page with WordPress, simply by pasting text from a Word or LibreOffice document was easy as you can do it when you reply on any good Forum boards. Not at all. It’s a nightmare!

The standard paragraph block breaks your pasted text in hundreds paragraphs, everywhere the “return” key is hit! There is no way to change this behavior.
The classic Paragraph block, breaks all the spacing in the pasted text.
The preformatted block has practically no formatting buttons on its toolbar. The plugin “TinyMCE Advanced” doesn’t help.
Furthermore, inside of a block you can’t set different text alignment to different rows.

I wonder why the developers simply doesn’t make an option available where the user can decide whether WordPress has to create automatically paragraphs or not.

At the moment WordPress is a nightmare if you need to create pages pasting large portions of text, just simply formatted, from .docx or .odt documents. Also the way back is a pain (copy text from the WP editor and paste into a document)

  • Gutenberg is complete crap. I don’t know why the core team of WordPress is so much fascinated about it. Gutenburg is a complete failure and it will be wise for the core team to accept it and stop developing this crap further.

Does the Disable Gutenburg plugin help?

    @rajiv.pro82: I agree.
The idea to edit the pages using blocks would be good, but these blocks are useless if they work in this way.

    @arcray:
I have tried the plugin which allows to switch between classic editor and Gutenberg (I don’t remember the name), but the button “Paste from Word” was nowhere present, then I uninstalled the plugin.
Also in the classic editor, I had the same issue of messed line spacing when pasting text.
I would not try to remove completely the Gutenberg editor, because I would not risk to damage irreversibly my WP installation, and maybe the “Paste from Word” button will not return anyway. Note that 5.4.2 is my first version of WordPress.

I know only that there are forums where I can paste content from Word without big issues and even insert quickly images, videos, etc.

I don’t know if this changed in the new WordPress 5.5 which has just been released, but i can copy/paste from Word documents and all formatting comes across perfectly. No special button, just copy/paste.

I can also copy from web pages, and also compose text exactly as I would have expected.

I do a lot of work in normal text editors – that content just copy/pastes across into a single paragraph block also with no issues.

I can also drag pictures from my web browser into the document. It copies across the alt tags and everything.

While it takes a little getting used to, I find this editor more powerful than the classic editor.

One of my most favourite features is that i can copy/paste an entire page easily. I used that in a previous version of WordPress with Gutenberg to copy entire posts/articles from an old Gutenberg website to a new one. It was amazingly easy.

Kudos to the work done in these latest releases. It’s becoming more of a dream to work with.

In the next weeks I will update WP. Ihave to backup the site and DB before. But I don’t expect big changes

It is good to work adding blocks in the pages, but these blocks must be versatile and flexible. There are also some useful features when you paste links or images, but it is not good with text from Word and the blocks are not flexible. It is not possible to place more blocks inline, without to divide the page in colums (max 3)

The Gutenberg editor works is active only in the block type “Paragraph” which is totally useless.
Who wants to have his pasted text from Word broken in hundred paragraphs? One block for each line break with “Enter” in the document? It’s a joke? It gives me headache only to navigate in that sea of paragraphs.
Try also to copy a page fragmented in Gutenberg paragraphs into a Word Document and see how the line breaks will look.

And why can’t the user disable this hated auto paragraph function? I am not the only who doesn’t need it. When I copy and paste a text into WP I don’t want have line spaces different than how they look in the Word document (in both Gutenberg and classic editor).

The “preformatted” block is too limited. There are no buttons to set alignment, underline, insert photo, videos etc… useless.
In the Gutenberg editor there are almost no formatting option. It is even not possible to insert 2 photos inline without to use a block with 2 colums!

The only usable block for me is the “classic” block in someway. But also with the TinyMCE plugin, the “paste from Word” button is no more present, and I have to retouch manually the line breaks as they should be. I have not this problems when pasting text in emails or into other forms.

Who wants to have his pasted text from Word broken in hundred paragraphs?

@tyco72 are you saying that when you copy/paste text from word into gutenberg that it creates a whole pile of separate paragraph blocks? that’s not what happens to me. i couldn’t get it to do that if i wanted it to. copy/paste creates one paragraph block only.

copy/paste creates one paragraph block only.

ahhh actually now i understand what you are saying – but it’s so seamless i never realised there were multiple paragraph blocks.

Try also to copy a page fragmented in Gutenberg paragraphs into a Word Document and see how the line breaks will look.

if i use control-c to copy it, i can paste it back into word and it uses the same text style as when i originally grabbed it. perhaps your needs are more specific than mine, but it appears to handle it as i would have expected.

It is not possible to place more blocks inline, without to divide the page in colums (max 3)

gutenberg blocks by kadence blocks has “Row Layout” which permits up to 6 columns, all in a variety of different templated styles.

edit: i just checked – standard gutenberg will do as many columns as you can fit. you can simply duplicate a column. three is just a templated starting point.

It is even not possible to insert 2 photos inline without to use a block with 2 colums!

is this what you are trying to achieve?

this is done with paragraph blocks and image blocks. you set the alignment of the image block (right align for example) and use the up and down arrow controls to move it into line with text.

you can do multiple images side by side like this as well and the text will wrap around.

i’m only new to gutenberg and it’s a bit of a paradigm shift, however the more i play with it the more i’m enjoying it.

i’m not expecting someone to “convert” or “upgrade” a website with gutenberg – i think designing a new site is the correct approach. this is the same approach you would make if you changed builders. if you created a site using wpbakery, you can’t use that with elementor. you couldn’t start with divi and then change to beaver builder. all of these builders lock you into their own framework.

a fresh site with a fresh framework is the best approach, and i’m going to see how far i can go with gutenberg only.

I find the fragmentation in paragraph blocks a complete mess. When you get it, click on the icon “block navigation” on the top bar and you will see a long list of paragraphs which you can’t distinguish. It has no sense. I only need that when I paste text from Word, all the line spacing are exactly kept, as you see in the document.

The fastest way I found to put photos or video in line is to use the classic paragraph.
In the “image” or “youtube” block, I can insert only one element. How can you insert more?

About columns, I see the option to divide the page in max 3 columns. Do you mean to insert columns inside of a column? I didn’try, but I guess it becomes difficult to manage.

I can insert only one element. How can you insert more?

you don’t. if you have a paragraph block and then completely separate image blocks, you can move the images in-line with the text as per my previous example screenshot from imgur – don’t put the images embedded into the paragraph. just like with a normal layout system like word or publisher or html you have the item separate. you can then right justify the image and use the arrows to put it in place. that’s how i did the previous example.

Do you mean to insert columns inside of a column?

i just started a column block with no columns and then duplicated to make more. that’s not difficult to manage. it seems pretty logical actually.

I find the fragmentation in paragraph blocks a complete mess

to some degree i agree – but it appears that your complaint is the ability to use the block navigation at the top.

you originally thought that the issue was a copy/paste problem from another product, but that’s not the case. if you manually entered the text into gutenberg it would be exactly the same.

so i think it’s time to finish this topic. it’s not a copy/paste issue here, but rather a complaint about the block navigation widget.

    cheers, Wiz!!

One of the Gutenberg blocks is “Classic” using this you can paste continuous paragraphs inside without separating them.

    @ wizdude
My complain was not about the block navigation widget. It was only to show how many paragraph blocks mess up the page.

My complain is that there is no option to disable the autoparagraph behavior. Also in the classic block, WP inserts a spacing row where there is no spacing in the Word document (1 single return as line break), and it adds 2 spacing lines where in Word there is only 1 spacing line with the return key. It has no sense and nobody who pastes contents from Word needs it really. At least make this behavior deactivable.
When you copy a text from WP back into a Word document, the spacing is also not kept as you visually see in WP.
