Unsure whether my installation has worked properly

I’ve just set up my first wordpress site through Godaddy. However, after going through the process of setting up the MySQL database and then FTP’ing all my WordPress files to the server, I noticed something strange in the URL to my site when I tried to go to wp admin.

If I type my domain name as follows:

https://www.domainname.com/wp-admin

I get the message: Error establishing a database connection

If I type the following instead:

https://www.domainname.com/database/wp-admin

This takes me to the user login screen.

Is this normal? Are all my files in the correct place? They don’t seem to be in the root folder. I’m new to this, so would appreciate some help.
