Unsure of the Author Page Redirection Credibility

I want to make a custom author page in my website. The wordpress author/user settings won’t let me change anything, the way I want it to customize. I tried using plugins but they are not much of help either.

Now I have come up with a solution of my own. What if I create a parent page “authors” then create sub pages for each author, e.g; (domain/authors/mike) (domain/authors/sarah) and then redirect them from wordpress authors e.g; wordpress created author [domain/author/mike] to my custom page [domain/authors/mike]

Will this work? does the importance of author page remains for SEO purpose and does Google still recognize the Author page’s credibility after it’s fully customized?
