    Hi,

Everytime I submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster, it keeps giving me an error “Unsupported file format”.

It single out jamyeprice.com/page-sitemap.xml as the culprit.

I regenerated the sitemap a few times but I still have the same problem.

I also have the sitemap validated at a few online validator and so far they all pass with flying colors.

I have a WP site residing in the same domain but in a subfolder using the same theme but I had no problem submitting that sitemap. So it can’t be a theme related problem.

Although W3TC plugin has been known to generate bad sitemap, I am not using that plugin.

I am stumped so any new ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi @jerparx,

I saw that article a while back. Unfortunately, none of it applies to my situation. I am open to any ideas.

@webinsights If you are still experiencing the error in Google Search Console after checking the possible causes mentioned previously, we would next recommend disabling and then re-enabling sitemaps to force a cache update. To do so please perform the following steps:

      1. Log into WordPress and click on the SEO link on the left-hand menu.
      2. Click on ‘XML Sitemaps.’
      3. Toggle the switch to ‘Disabled.’
      4. Click ‘Save Changes.’
      5. Toggle the switch to ‘Enabled.’
      6. Click ‘Save Changes.’

We also have a guide on how to enable XML Sitemaps here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/enable-xml-sitemaps-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/

Can you please try this and let us know if after completing this if Google still returns the error on the page sitemap?

    Hi @devnihil,

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. I tried deactivating and reactivating the plugin and that didn’t work as well.

So I decided to do a fresh install.

And since I am going that route, I figure I might as well do it right. I deleted the plugin, deactivate my caching plugin, bypass CloudFlare, clear any server cache and then install Yoast SEO. That worked.

I don’t know if it is just one or all of the steps I did that solve this sitemap issue. But I am just glad it worked.

Thanks everyone who read and chip in ideas.
