• I thought I should give XCloner a chance, replacing the nagging Akeeba, but I’m starting to regret that after a month already.

It’s for some reason very unstable, often not able to finish up manual backups.

For schedules we doesn’t know if it even tries, on all sites with schedules there are no backups taken, and no list or notifications of failed backups – so don’t know if it’s even trying.

For manual backups there is no profile or one button push for backups with chosen settings, settings needs to be selected each time, making it a pain in the …

So all in all I’m really disappointed, especially since it doesn’t work better together with Watchful.

So eagerly waiting for any new improved releases, who hopefully would make it more useful and stable. But if that’s not coming soon, we have to switch back.

  • Are you using it with WordPress? Not that it helps but I’ve been using it for years with only a minor issue here and there.

Well, good for you then @duanemitchell, and I’m sure it works somewhat on small simple sites etc. But the tings mentioned isn’t minor issues to me, and when coming from Akeeba it’s lacking quite much in functionality, also against the owners own Watchful(huh?). So I’ll recommend giving Akeeba a spin to see what you have missed out on, myself I just went back as I need the backups to run when the shall – also manually with one click when needed. Seems like a bad idea to wait for new releases here, coming soon clearly isn’t soon. ??

I do use Akeeba but just on my Joomla sites. I’ve been using it for about 15 years with no problem. Xcloner has been working good for me for over 10 years. The UX of Xcloner can be confusing. It is confusing in some cases. However in 15 years of web development both Akeeba and Xcloner do everything I need. I don’t think either is missing anything.

I find it a bit strange you’re using Akeeba on Joomla, and then Xcloner on WP, without missing anything, as they’re quite different in functionality etc. Anyhow it’s not just about a confusing UI, it’s missing some basic and expected functionality – especially against Watchful. And anyhow it’s quite problematic that backup fails doing what it should on like 30% of the sites where it has been installed.

And then there is the fact it hasn’t been updated for more than a year, who alone is a bit concerning.

I started using CMS with Mambo which became Joomla in 2008. WordPress was rather rough at the time and I didn’t start using it until about 2010. There was only Akeeba for Joomla at the time. No Akeeba for WordPress. Not sure when I started using Xcloner for WordPress but I chose it to replace another plugin that was disconinued. So that’s how I got with the backup tools I’m using for the two platforms. They both backup and restore with no problems. That’s all I’m looking for. If it’s not broke then I’m not going to mess with it. What do you think is missing?

The only time I’ve had problems with backups failing it was the hosting service that was the culprit.

Yes it is concerning that it has not been updated in over a year. But it works. I don’t use Watchful.

Thanks for the history lesson, but you’re not the only one being around since Mambo. And also Xcloner have been around for some time, for Joomla also previously. ??

As I said it’s good for you if it’s works for you, but that’s not the case for everyone else at all time as we can see around.

Some of the missing parts in Xcloner has already been mentioned, and the owner of Xcloner who is Watchful, knows what’s missing at that end.

It’s been stated several months ago that a new version is coming soon. Don’t know what soon is if it’s 4-5+ months ago …

    Anyhow, this isn’t leading anywhere.

Hi Rune. Would love to see if you have issues with the latest release.

    Hi,

I had it installed on one simple site with almost no media, so I updated it there. Then I added a schedule to it, which was showing executed after the scheduled time was passed, but still there was no backups taken, and no error or log. Only notification found is about there being no backups.

Manual backup did work this time though. ??
