My first experience with the FastDup plugin is mixed. I am delighted and worried at the same time, both.

I installed the plugin for the first time and saved a backup of my website. I tested everything on localhost with XAMPP. The website is ready to be uploaded to the server. The plugin is very intuitive.

    My first backup

I started a “Full Site” backup. The circle (loader) spins on the Database. I realized something was wrong when the process took too long. The database is only 15 MB in size. After 20 minutes, I stopped the backup, deleted and started from the beginning. NOTE: Advice for other users – if the backup is not completed within few minutes – stop and start from the beginning.

This is the new time for “Full Site” backup (480 MB):

    27 seconds to scan
    77 seconds to build

I can’t believe this is possible. The fastest backup/clone/migrate plugin I’ve used so far.

Then I made a “Only Database” backup just in case. Blink of an eye, in just one second.

After that, I also started a custom backup “Site without wp-content” (everything except wp-content). Maybe a little more than a second. This is difficult to measure. You blink and it’s over.

    Now I’m testing the restore:

(1.) I started “Full Site” restore. The plugin works great.

    30 seconds to restore

Everything looks normal on the website, but a few pictures are missing. The link to the image is broken (something like mywebsite.commy-image.png).

I clicked on the Permalink several times. I check but nothing. The problem is still present.

(2.) I start restore from “Only Database”. Completed. I click on Permalink. Everything is fine. All images on the page are visible. I don’t notice any problem.

    Just in case

However, I will transfer the website to the server with the plugin that I have used so far, in which I have full confidence. Right now I’m not sure if FastDup did everything without error.

    Questions:

    1. Fortunately, I saved the log.txt files. If you can detect the error from them and fix the plugin, let me know.
    2. Why does FastDup not check the build process or at least for the backup database? I would be happier with a few extra minutes to guarantee safety.
    3. I assume that everything is fine with the files and the complete WordPress installation. I think the only problem is in backing up the database. Can you fix this?
    4. The log.txt file does not say much to me as a user. Maybe it says something for the developers. I can’t read anything useful from that. Can you fix this?

I want FastDup to be as simple and easy to use as it is now. I just want it to be safer to use. I wouldn’t want it to be bloated like it happened with the Duplicator plugin. This is exactly why I started using FastDup.

    Thanks in advance. Regards,

    Hi @vipteam,

Thanks for your patience. We have several tests on our side but there is no issue on this.
Could you please give us full path of the link of that example image as you said ”the link to the image is broken (something like mywebsite.commy-image.png).” ?
We look forward to hearing back from you.

    Many thanks!

    Hi @mialewp

My website is still localhost on XAMPP. Unfortunately, you cannot see the broken link online.

I will try to make everything I can available to you. I will bring up this website again as a test to get the data again. I will try that as soon as possible if not immediately. I’ll let you know the outcome.

The fact is that in one backup (Full Site) the database was built incorrectly, and in the other backup (Database only) it was built well. Or the error occurred during Restore. I’m not sure.

If the database can help find the error, tell me what to look for? And how?

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to try FastDup a few times yesterday. I only tried all three options as I described above once. Even if this is just some kind of coincidence, it scares me. In any case, it shouldn’t be happening.

    Thanks in advance. Regards,

    Hi @mialewp,

OK. Fortunately, I have a few good backups so it wasn’t hard for me to destroy the site and experiment with it. Now I have a lot more testing and experience so maybe we can already draw some conclusions. Let’s start in order.

    My first test, yesterday

I did not restore the website. I wanted to leave that for the end. Instead, I started with new testing.

    Links

The problem keeps repeating itself. So it’s not a coincidence. There seems to be a pattern emerging here.

This is what the links look like:

    https://www.mytest.commarketing-and-banner-advertising/banner-ads/
    https://www.mytest.comwp-content/uploads/newsletter-why-white-list.png

Not all links are broken. Only a smaller number of links. That’s strange.

    Backup

    Full Site (all-in-one)
Process always stuck at 10%. I stop, delete and start again. I don’t wait more than 2 minutes. After the fourth attempt, the backup file is complete.

2-Step (my custom template, site without wp-content)
The process always starts and completes, always on the first try.

    Database Only
The process always starts and completes, always on the first try. I was wrong when I said that was the problem. Database is the only one that works without errors and eventually fixes the problems.

    Restore/Migrate

    FULL SITE (all-in-one)
The installer starts without any problems. The website opens without any problems. Everything is in its place and everything works well except for some links. Problem: links

2-STEP (my custom template, site without wp-content)
I manually unzip wp-content to root. The installation (restore) starts without any problems. The website opens without any problems. Everything is in its place and everything works well except for some links. Problem: links

    DATABASE ONLY
It is always the solution to all my problems.
I copy the database (installer and zip archive) to the installation directory.
I start the installer. The database has been overwritten. Now everything works without problems. All problems with the links have been solved. The website now looks and works flawlessly.

    My thinking

I don’t know what is causing the problem (maybe my website configuration is just like that) but I may have a solution. As you noticed, database always solves all my problems after migration (Migrate/Restore).

I might be wrong but this is how the FastDup plugin works. For build Backup:
    STEP 1. Build Database
STEP 2. Build files (zip archive)

    For Restore/Migrate Backup:
    STEP 1. Restore Database
STEP 2. Restore files (zip archive)

All problems will be solved if you change the steps. For Restore/Migrate:
STEP 1. Restore files (unzip archive)
STEP 2. Restore database (this should always be the last step)

If necessary, put the Database in a separate zip archive. (If you have one or two zip archives, it doesn’t matter to me. It won’t matter to other users either).

    In the end

Now I have full confidence in FastDup. 2-STEP installation is not a problem for me. In fact, I have been doing this for years. For backup, this includes manual packing in zip, and for restore, you manually unpack into the installation directory. This is a way to avoid all (any) server restrictions.

I see that FastDup can do Full backup (Full site) and I’m sorry that it doesn’t always do that. Maybe the problem is the size of the website (mine is just under 500MB now).

If, during Restore/Migrate, the complete content of the WordPress installation is first installed, and the Database as the last step, then all problems would be solved. In the vast majority of cases as in mine.

I hope this is a good idea for one of the next updates to Fast Dup.

Also, if you can add 2-Step (exclude wp-content) to templates by default, that would be perfect. Then we would have: Full Site (all-in-one), 2-Step (excluded wp-content), and Database only.

    Thanks in advance.

    Have a nice day. Regards,

    Hi @vipteam ,

    Update

One more try. I deactivated all plugins except FastDup. The result is exactly the same.

Restore (Full site) restores the website but there is still a problem with some of the links. As in previous attempts. Then I add the installer and archive for the database. I start the installer. This brings the page to order. Everything works as it should.

Update – My last test (I have nothing more to test)

I changed my original theme. For the test, I use the latest WordPress theme.

Theme: Default WordPress Theme: Twenty Twenty-Three v1.0
Plugins: All plugins deactivated except FastDup.

Everything is exactly the same. Problem with the links.

I tested everything I could. There is no conflict. This is definitely a problem with the FastDup plugin. Something is wrong here.

I hope you find and fix the problem.

    Thanks in advance. Regards,

    Two drawbacks

For me this is less important but why wouldn’t this work as intended.

The View Log button does not work. The log is not displayed.

Tooltips – Depending on the length of the message. Unreadable because it hides behind the sidebar. I work on a 14 inch laptop. I don’t see the whole messages.

After all the testing, I will try to be as simple as possible. I repeated the extensive testing with my several other websites. The error occurs on all websites (different WordPress themes). There is always only one mistake here. Some of the links (links and images) are missing a slash (/) after the domain.

    https://www.mytest.comsomething/something/some-page-or-post/
    https://www.mytest.comwp-content/uploads/some-image.png

Test on a completed website or make a test with 10 pages, each with 10 links and 10 images, then add a footer with 10 links to these pages, a menu with 5 links – you will discover the problem.

If you’re testing on a simple site with just two pages and two links, you probably won’t notice anything.

A very big problem is when you have a completed website that you want to clone/migrate. FastDup gets the job done quickly. In all cases, you expect a cloned website. But it’s not. You will discover errors after thorough testing.

Perhaps you can add a command to ensure that all links after the domain have the required slash (/).

    Hi?@vipteam ,

    Thanks for you patience!

We have release a new version, please update to the latest version and let us know if it fix the issues.
