• I have been trying to use this plugin for roughly a year with 12 wordpress websites but removed it lately, because it was too unreliable. For example the plugin informed me that all updates for all sites have been installed but when checking those sites manually there always were a few that didn’t get updated at all. Some of the sites that actually got updates on the other hand completely broke. Which didn’t happen when I ran the updates manually. There also were issues with multiple commercial themes that used their own update downloader to download commercial plugins they had licensed from third party companies. Also I always had to update external sites multiple times in a row because mainwp skipped parts of the updates otherwise.

A real pity, this plugin felt usefull but was far too unrealiable to be used with client sites.

  • Hi @notboring,

I apologize for any problems you have experienced with MainWP.

For example the plugin informed me that all updates for all sites have been installed but when checking those sites manually there always were a few that didn’t get updated at all. Some of the sites that actually got updates on the other hand completely broke. Which didn’t happen when I ran the updates manually.

First, let me say that we are testing our plugin on multiple setups and different hosting environments. We haven’t experienced problems with sites getting broken after performing updates unless the plugin/theme that gets updated introduces some problem.

The Update process itself is not different from the WP built-in process. Technically, the MainWP plugin just triggers the WP update process. Maybe the problem was caused by insufficient server resources on your side, and the process timed out? Have you checked the MainWP system requirements to be sure everything is set for the best MainWP experience?

There also were issues with multiple commercial themes that used their own update downloader to download commercial plugins they had licensed from third party companies.

Even though MainWP should be able to process most, there could still be some items that have a custom update process that does not use WP standards.

Theoretically, in cases like that, we would need to check if something can be done on our side. Over time, we have added support for items like that, and we have added filters that allow you to hook in these items for better compatibility; take a look at the below guides:

    https://kb.mainwp.com/docs/premium-plugin-updates-not-detected/
    https://kb.mainwp.com/docs/premium-theme-updates-not-detected/

If you want us to take a look, please do not hesitate to open a helpdesk ticket, and we will check any problem you experience with our plugin.
